when updating hp 5258 printer software, when it finds the printer I cannot check box due to it being greyed out.

Hi,

You should see a Status Column, what is the exact listed status?

 

If it is listed as Up-to-date under Status, that means that the firmware is already installed and not applicable for your printer.

 

As an example, see below screenshot:
