won't print a envelope

Just bought a new HP 6455. I tried to print a small envelope several times using word and it won't print. Not sure what's wrong. amber light came on.

"Small" envelope might not be a supported size.

Even assuming plain paper (or card) would print at a particular size, envelopes have their own size limitations.

What?

Just because a paper size is supported (as standard or custom paper size form), the same cannot be said for envelopes of the same dimensions.  For example, the printer can print smaller paper size than it can print paper type envelopes.

According to the troubleshooting document, there should be a bit more information you can see / observe to help understand the "amber light".

What else?

If you have not done so, do install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

In fact, it is likely you have done this, else you could not print from Word (documents OR envelopes).

What else?

If you try to print a size that is not in the list, you can select Custom and add the dimensions.

If the size is too small for Word to handle, it will provide an error message and a suggested size.

DF, there is a place for envelopes in the main tray.  After about 5 attempts, I finally was able to complete the task.  Not quite sure why it takes so long to print even letter size paper. I waited almost a minute before the printer would start printing. Wi-Fi maybe???  The Wi-Fi light is on and it states the "printer is ready".  No clue, but thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, envelopes go in the main tray.

The slowness might (still) be due to either missing software or (more likely) missing setting that alerts the printer to the paper size / type loaded in the tray.

Paper Setting on Printer Control / Display Panel

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, Remove / add desired paper size - type

else

Wait a few seconds

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

On the Printer Control Display Panel,

Click Modify / Change / No-Yes (wording varies), adjust the paper size and type, Click OK

No Size?  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

Note:  Not all printers allow selection of “Custom”

Tray and Paper Management can also be adjusted (where supported) using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
