HP4480
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently upgraded to version 1511 of windows 10 home edition.  I have an HP4480 which is compatible with windows 10.  It is up-to-date with the correct drivers.

My printer will print in black and white if I am copying a document on the printer HOWEVER it will not print in black and white if I am printing from a document on my laptop or from an internet page.  I am also using Microsoft Edge.

I've run Scan Doctor, cleaned my print heads, made sure everything is aligned but cannot determine why I cannot print in black and white from the laptop but can from the printer.

The only diagnostic message I did receive is 'USB composite device can't work properly with USB 3.0'  I have no idea what this means and don't think I have choices for ports on my Inspiron 15R 5520 notebook.

I've also posted on Microsoft forums but really need to get the printer working with the OS and can't afford to buy a new printer just because I upgraded.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Janet

I resolved the issue.  For some reason my genuine HP 60 print cartridge was the issue.   Almost empty, I've left them in before without a problem.  Once I replaced cartridge, everything now printing correctly in black and white.

Hi @Jan-DG,

Thank you for joining the HP Forums!

I understand that your HP Photosmart c4480 printer will not print in black. I am happy to help!

This printer was made before the USB 3.0 technology came out. It is only compatible with USB 2.0 printer cables and ports. I would recommend to try plugging in the cable to another port on the computer. If you need help verifying if your computer has a USB 2.0 port. I would recommend contacting Dell Support for further assistance.

Looks like I will have to contact support.

This morning I reinstalled software and drivers successfully.  Running various tests, I am getting mixed results.

Test print from HP printer install wizard. . . is in black and white

Test print from HP print and scan doctor is not in black and white

Test print from printer properties is in black and white

Document print is not in black and white.

My laptop does not have a USB 2.0 but has worked with the USB 3.0 and the 1st version of windows 10 just fine.
