Hi @Frankie68,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When an HP printer won't print PDF or Word documents but prints other types of files, the problem could be related to software, driver issues, or specific settings for those file types. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:
Check Printer Driver and Software:
- Make sure the printer driver is up to date. Visit the HP website, find your printer model, and download the latest drivers.
- Ensure that the software you are using to view PDFs (like Adobe Reader) and Word (like Microsoft Word) is up to date.
Print as Image (for PDF files):
- When trying to print a PDF, open it in Adobe Reader.
- Click "Print" and then look for the "Advanced" button.
- Select the option "Print as Image" and try printing again.
Printer Settings:
- Check the printer settings within the print dialog box when you attempt to print the Word or PDF document. Ensure that no unusual settings are selected, such as an incorrect paper size or media type that might be ignored for other file types.
File Integrity:
- Ensure that the PDF or Word document is not corrupted. Try opening different PDFs or Word documents to see if the issue persists with all files or just specific ones.
Print from Another Program:
- Try printing the PDF from a different viewer, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, or try printing the Word document from another word processing program like Google Docs.
Check the Printer Queue:
- Look at the printer queue by going to the "Devices and Printers" in Windows Control Panel. Clear out any stuck jobs that might be causing issues.
Restart Everything:
- Turn off your printer, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. Restart your computer as well to clear out any temporary glitches.
Test Printer with Different Connection:
- If you are using a network printer, try connecting the printer directly to your computer via USB, or vice versa, to determine if there’s an issue with the network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
