Just run Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers\HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z (Network)
and then click Activate Scan to Computer and it is on permanently. I loveHP!
Get back to us in a few days!

HP, LISTEN UP! I can't believe HP hasn't figured this out after all these years. I keep getting burned by them.
If you want to scan a document from the scanner to your computer over the network, you must first "Activate Scan To Computer" on the computer. The problem is, it is not persistent, so if the computer sleeps or is restarted, you must do it again. This is obviously annoying, and too much to ask an average user to do. It should be SEEMLESS!!
If I could have gotten a Canon here, I would have. At home and other workplaces, as soon as I turn my computer on it pops up on the printer screen and I can scan right to it. It just works, exactly what users are always asking for. I use both a Canon MX860 and Canon MX870 with ZERO problems. Even non computer experts can scan to a computer from the printer, whithout having to go to the computer first. It greatly cripples the usefulness of a Scan to Computer option if you have to go back to the computer first, which may be far away.
Please fix this soon HP, or I will have to replace this printer with a Canon, and you then not get my future ink cartidge purchases. I have no problems with throwing this brand new printer in the garbage.

I just installed an Envy 110 AIO. Has this problem with the annoying dialog box at every computer reboot.
this needs to be fixed to provide seemless scanner activation whenever either the printer, or the pc, is functional.
The printer seems to keep connection with the wire less network just fine, regardless of that is done with the various components.
Perhaps the HP managers of the development team that supports the printer software should challenge the manager of those who support the scanner software to see which team of developers can make the scanner side of the device work like the printer side.
Winner gets to keep their job. Loser has to work the call center in India during the Summer, using the name "Peggy".

I have a solution.
In Windows 7, you can right-click the activation icon in HP printer manager and move it to start menu>programs>startup. It will run the activation program automatically on computer start.
In Windows XP, it's a bit more complicated. You have to create a shortcut to Program files\HP...\Bin\ScanToPCActivationApp.exe and there are some arguments to be added. I wrote a simple program to find out what those arguments are. If anyone's still interested, I can describe the procedure.

I use windows Logon/Logoff scripts (Group policy manager).
On logon you can call ScanToPCActivationApp.exe with command-line parameters to activate automatically.
On logoff I call my own WINAPI program that virtually "clicks" the deactivate button.
This way even if there are multiple users on the same computer only the one that's currently logged on activates this thing.
Anyway, I would like to inform HP that this is not how things should be made. It's not exactly "user friendly".
