Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. office Jet 8600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

some documents scanned on my printer and saved as PDF's cannot be opened by recent versions of Adobe Reader. Some saved documents have this problem and some do not. Some users can open the documents and some cannot.  On a forum on Adobe Documents I have read:

Issue: PDFs created from non-Adobe products don't always comply with the complete PDF specification, and therefore do not open in Reader or Acrobat. In addition, earlier versions of Reader or Acrobat are not as strict as newer versions in their compliance to PDF standards. So even though you could open a particular PDF in an older version of the app, you may not be able to open it in the latest version.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

Can you try another PDF reader?

Else, we'll suggest that you try this alternative scan software to see if the PDF scanned can be read:

HP Scan Extended

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Let us know if that works.

We had previously been using HP Scan and Capture.  The software had some convenient teatures, but at the same time seems to have created PDF documents which sometimes could not be opened by some users.  At your suggestion, we downloaded and are using the new software "HP Extended Scan."  It seems very bare bones without many user friendly features.  We tested our first document which scanned and opened properly.  However we need a few more days to test it to see if ALL documents can be opened.  We will report back in a few days.
