I have an MFP477 fdw. I try to insert a 32 gb thumb drive formatted FAT32, and when I try to scan to the USB thumb drive, I keep getting an 'INSERT USB DRIVE message.
I put a new USB drive that I bought tonight into the printer, and the printed DID see the thumb drive and offered to format it, and I allowed it to. BUT THEN, when I tried to scan a doc to the USB, I get the stupid INSERT THUMB DRIVE message!
I've tried it with different FAT32 thumb drives, and still get the message! Aarrrgh!
Had printer search for firmware updates, and it says fully updated.
PLEASE, WILL SOMEONE CLUE ME IN ON HOW I CAN GET IT TO SCAN TO A PROPERLY FORMATTED THUMB DRIVE? i don't really want to throw the printer in front of a moving freight train.

Which port did you plug into? Your description sounds like the stick is in the rear port not the one under the control panel. I have also seen random sticks that do not seem to work and it might simply not be compatible and I suggest you try a different stick.

LOLOL Thank you so much for your help! Yes I was trying to contort my body and use the back USB port. The printer sits on a desk so I never can see below the control panel. There it was. Kind of embarrassing seeing as I'm an 18-yr IT veteran now in mgmt. But like they say, those who can do, and those who can't supervise. Thanks again!

The back port is used to add job storage function to printer.
