macOS 10.13 High Sierra

After uninstalling some software, it seems I uninstalled Bonjour or lost something, now my all-in-one won't let me scan.

 

Relevant information:

I'm using MacOS 10.13 High Sierra

I have uninstalled and re-installed the printer multiple times, both by manual (IP address) and HP easy start

In the printer IP settings, it says Bonjour is enabled

I get Bonjour-related errors during install

I could previously use the scan functions from my same computer. Thus, I know it should work. I uninstalled some software and now cannot use the scanning function. I did a re-install of MacOS. I have uninstalled/re-installed the printer. My wife also has a macbook air (same as me) and can scan normally. I can print but cannot scan.

 

I updated the firmware to the printer (latest version on HP site) yesterday. I have tried both IPP and 9100 printing settings in the printer IP admin settings under 'network'.

 

How can I access wireless scanning functions again on my laptop? Thanks.

Thank you for the detailed information. According to the printer's EWS page, the Bonjour is enabled. Let us try these steps:

 

Check for any software updates on MAC

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

 

  • Make sure the printer and the MAC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • This printer supports only 2.4GHz network. So, the MAC should be on the 2.4GHz network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.
  • Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.
  • Restart the wireless router, the printer, and the MAC

On the printer's control panel, press the Wireless button  and the Information button  at the same time.

Both a Network Configuration Page and a Wireless Network Test Report print.

Obtain the IP address of the printer.

 

Perform a ping test to check the connectivity:

  1. Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer
  2. On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box
  3. Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings
  4. Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost
  5. Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

If 0% loss, install the printer using AirPrint driver.

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

Under 'kind', select 'Bonjour multifunction'

6.) Try to print and scan.

@kumar0307 Much of your reply didn't apply to my situation. 1. As stated, the printer previously worked. I'm well aware of having it connected to the right network, etc. I have restarted the printer and wireless router and my laptop multiple times. 2. There are no updates available and there's 0% loss on the ping 3. I removed my printer as you suggested but cannot add it by airprint because when I click 'add printer' it does not find the printer. The only option is if I re-install it manually by putting in the IP address, which leads to the same error as before. My wife and I are both on the same network as the printer. She can scan wirelessly, I cannot. We are using the same laptop model, same macOS version, etc. What do you recommend next?

Add the AirPrint printer to the Mac printer queue

Confirm you are using AirPrint by adding the printer in System Preferences.

  1. Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

  2. Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.

    • If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign  to delete the printer, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed in the Add Printer or Scanner window, go to the Frequently asked questions in this document to resolve connection issues, try to add the printer again, and then continue to the next step.

  3. Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.

  4. Open a document or photo, click File, and then click Print.

I think you didn't actually read my post. Everything you wrote doesn't apply to my situation.

Let's try the below steps to see if that helps -

 

1.) Remove All Barriers: Certain building materials can get in the way of weaker signals like Bluetooth. Metal, bulletproof glass, concrete, and plaster are particularly bad, and marble, plaster and brick aren’t great easy. So if you’re really struggling with interference, your first step should be to move your Bluetooth devices away from these materials. That means no brick walls between you and your devices, and definitely no metal desks!

 

2.) Change Router Channel: If you have an Apple router and you’re constantly getting interference with your WiFi, try rebooting it. Upon restart, the station will search for a new channel. Specifically, a different channel than the one your Bluetooth devices is using to communicate. If you don’t have an Apple router, you may need to instead go into your router settings and try changing the channel manually. Experiment with different channels to see which one works best.

 

3.) Move Closer to Your Router: If you often find that you’re getting interference when talking on a wireless headset while on a WiFi call (you’ll know because you’ll hear static), try moving closer to your router. This will give you a more robust WiFi connection, so the Bluetooth frequency can’t overpower it.

 

4.) Get Away From Microwaves and Fluorescent Lighting: Both emit frequencies of 2.4GHz, and moving away from them will distance you from the source.

 

I'd like to know the following to isolate the issue further-

 

1.) Are the printer and Mac connected to the same network?

2.) Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz? If yes, make sure the dual band has different SSIDs for 2.4G and 5G networks.

3.) What is the distance between the router and the printer?

4.) Is there an antivirus software installed on your Mac?

5.) Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results? Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.

 

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.

 

Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.  Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

Jay - I think you are just doing copy/paste from other places after you see that I have a printer issue. Nothing you have said applies at all to my post. Did you read it? This is frustrating.

 

Here's the whole problem in 1 sentence:

I need to get Bonjour working on my laptop again. 

 

There's no problem with the wifi settings, location in the home, nothing. Please stop asking me about my 2.4ghz band, etc because I know enough about computers to know that's not the issue.

 

My wife can scan wirelessly without problems. Until 2 weeks ago, so could I, but I accidentally uninstalled something on my computer related to Bonjour while removing other software.

 

THIS and ONLY THIS is the issue you should help me with. 

 

Everything else you have said was already answered above, and none of those items are related to the problem. Those are non-issues, so I hope your next response will actually address the real problem, not these things.

Here is the problem in 1 statement:

Until 2 weeks ago, I could remotely scan and use the machine normally, but I accidentally uninstalled something related to 'Bonjour' on my laptop, so now I cannot use the full functions even though other people in my house can do it from their laptops.

 

Please address only this issue, not these other things you're asking about. Thanks.
