Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Envy 5640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Installed on Windows 10 64 bit, which has some 64 bit programs installed. The scanner works from the 32-bit programs and the driver itself, but from any 64 bit program it isn't found.

C:\Windows\Twain_32 exists (hence indicating the existance of the 32 bit driver), but the C:\Windows\Twain_64 does not exist, indicating the scanner is not equipped with a 64 bit scanner driver.

I just downloaded the last version of the software (version 40.11), but even after installing that the 64 version of the TWAIN driver remains absent.

So now if I want to scan something I have to scan it from the HP software, before loading it into my 64 bit program to edit, wheras with a 32 bit application I can do this directly.

Does anyone know if the 64 bits driver exists, and if not if it ever will be created?

Thanks a lot for your patience.

I got an update that the HP Scan software is a 32 bit WIA application. The printer works on 64bit but if you wish to use your own application and use HP Scan to import the images then it will not work.

Hope this answers the questions.

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums.

I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY 5640 e-All-in-One Printer and the scanner works from the 32-bit programs and the driver itself, but from any 64 bit program, it isn't found.I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

The Version: 40.11 printer drivers are programmed to install and work with Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems. Source: HP printer setup (Windows built-in driver)

Let us uninstall the printer drivers from the root level and then reinstall them. The following steps will help:

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • You may download and install the drivers from this link

I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Let me know the results.

Cheers! 🙂

Sorry it took a bit before I responded. I wasn't in a position to try this as your response came in yesterday evening. Anyway...

Removed all HP related programs to the printer from the Application control panel (appwiz.cpl). There were four, one plugin for Google Drive, one plugin for Dropbox, one helpset and one driver files. All four were removed.

Opened the printers settings, and removed all HP printers from the list. That means the OfficeJet 6700 that's elsewhere on the network also got axed.

Opend the printui /s one, and dis NOT have anything relating to the Envy 5640 in there, but I did have some stuff for the OfficeJet 6700... Which I axed.

Rebooted the PC.

After rebooting the PC I switched on the printer, which was detected by Windows and apparently installed. Then went for the downloaded driver (same one as you linked), and installed that. Post install I checked the existance of a twain_64 folder in Windows, but alas, only the twain_32 existed.

I then opened my 64 bit program, and tried to open the scanner interface from it. Reply: No scanner found.

Then I opened the HP Envy desktop app, switched to the scanner tab, clicked to scan something, and was presented with the scan-interface (which I therefore assume is the 32 bit interface.

As a final measure I rechecked the printui /s bit, and I see the HP Envy driver (x64) in there, so the printerdrive itself is 64 bit. It's the scanner driver that's apparently only 32 bit. And that's my basic question. Will that one be released in a 64 bit variant still?

Not a problem. Glad to have you back.

You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that.

The drivers should still work as these are tried and tested drivers. Please create a new user account in Windows and install the drivers in the new user account: http://hp.care/2qNyzzc

Alternately you may try using the HP Smart app and check how it goes.

I sincerely hope this helps. Keep me posted.

All the best! 🙂

Seeing the driver does work normally, reinstalling under a new user account in Windows is not going to do anything.

The Printerdriver is 64 bit, the scanner driver is not. Even after reinstalling the whole driver package this does not change. So installing under another user account will not bring any change to this either.

Using the HP Scan and Capture app is basically the same as I need to do now. Start the HP Envy app that is part of the installation package, scan the item, save it as a JPG, and then head on over to my picture editing program to open that JPG to be able to edit it.

The previous version of the editing program was 32 bit (the new version has done away with that and is fully 64 bit). In the 32 bit version I could click the scan icon, be presented with the TWAIN interface and scan my document directly into the application.

With the coming of the 64 bit version of the app, it is going to look for the C:\Windows\Twain_64 folder to find the 64 bit scan interface TWAIN driver. And that folder just doesn't exist.

As stated, the Twain_32 folder (which holds the 32bit driver for the scanner) is present, hence my ability to scan from 32 bit programs, but the 64 bit version remains gone. I therefore think it doesn't exist within the driver package, and the claim that it is a 64-bit package only extends to the printerdriver (which I've already indicated actually is 64 bit).

So basically my question remains... is there a 64 bit TWAIN driver for the Envy 5640 printer/scanner, and if not, will there be one eventually?

Thank you for your reply.

I will need some time to research on this issue and reply to you. And will keep you posted in the next day or two with any information I get.

I appreciate your patience in the meantime.

@Neko1308,

I read the reply. It is great to have you back. Your patience and efforts are always appreciated. You've been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills, remarkable patience and great attitude. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

As @MKazi is out for the day, I am replying on his behalf.  I have done some research and found an HP forum's post that has been accepted as a solution authored by a reputed HP Forum Expert.

Please try performing these steps from this link: http://hp.care/2tuotW6 and check if the issue gets resolved.

If the issue persists, it is possible that certain applications only support twain like Adobe Photoshop that allows you to scan. Several other applications may not support Twain. And the version of the app that you may be trying to use may not have twain built-in support for it and could be a limitation of the app as HP scan and capture software app wors for you.

Good Luck.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Using the HP TWAIN solution in the other thread gives me a slightly fancier scanning tool than the driver-companied scantool does. And scanning from it works well.

It does however NOT install a 64 bit driver, but remains with a 32 bit driver. So my 64 bit drawing program still relates to me that it can't find a scanner.
