I am having the same issue as @roverguy who posted to this board in Nov 2015: I am suddenly receiving an error message that says "Memory device is read-only" when scanning to a USB, despite never having this problem before. I tried three different USB sticks, all with the same error message.
I turned the machine off and back on, without result. I read your response to @roverguy, and performed the check for firmware updates both on the front panel of the printer, and via the link you provided. According to the self-check within the printer, it already has the latest version of the required software. Then I downloaded the most recent version of the firmware (FDP1CN1640BR).
Neither of these actions fixed the problem: I still receive the "Memory device is read-only" error message, despite the USBs all working perfectly on other devices.
You mentioned that you would send @roverguy a semi-full programming reset off-line, and that seemed to work for him. Can you please advise if this will be necessary for me as well, or if you have other suggestions? I need a solution as soon as possible, as I am in the middle of an important project that requires scanning. Thank you in advance for your prompt assistance.

You people at HP are completely incompetent. Rather than take responsibility for a printer that doesn't work you have us go through stupid tutorials that offer no solution for a problem created entirely by your inability to program a printer properly. USB's don't just randomly stop working - and on top of that I can drop whatever files I choose to on the USB from my desktop when it's hooked up to the printer. Read Only is an error YOUR printer created, not the computer. Spend the money to get a software update that fixes the issue or refund our money through class action lawsuit. You choose.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information such as serial numbers and case details.
If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
