HP Inkjet Printer 8615
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a feeling I know the answer to this already, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

We had some bad weather here a couple of days ago and a surge took out some of the items in my home, including an analog phone.  The phone line still works normally.   Now I'm in the process of testing my HP printer/fax I find that the fax is no longer functioning.  (The printer appears to otherwise be okay.)  I've looked at the set-up and nothing has changed that I can tell.

I've swapped the phone cord to another line and it had no effect on the fax.  The only message that I can get is that neither send nor receive is functional.  My guess is that the surge took out the analog port on the printer (since it also got an analog phone in another part of the house) and now my fax circuit board is toast.

I  know that in theory anything can be repaired, but is this repair cost effective?  Is there a daughter board and/or modem port that I can replace myself, or am I better off just giving the printer to my daughter and buying another with the features I want?  The printer/fax was relatively expensive, but my fear is that the repair will cost me nearly as much unless I can repair it myself.  (I'm A+, Cisco, and Microsoft cerrtified, and I should be able to do it if I can get the parts reasonably.)

(Incidentally, for the benefit of everyone I also had several items plugged into surge protectors which also blew.  I guess if it's your time, then nothing can save you.  (My next door neighbor also lost several  items, including a PC NIC card.)

Any advice appreciated.  Thanks.

HP was less than helpful.  They didn't even address my question.  It reminds me of the accident victim who goes to the emergency room and can't be seen until they validate his insurance card.

The unit is out of warranty and I know that.  You would think that they would give at least generic advice.  Thanks for your input, but I guess I'll figure this out on my own.

Hi,

First print a fax test report:
Run a fax test report to determine the faxing status on the printer and whether or not it is configured correctly to send and receive faxes.
  1. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon ().
  2. Touch Fax Setup, swipe the display to scroll to Fax Tools, and then touch Fax Tools.
  3. Touch Run Fax Test. The printer prints a fax test report.
  4. Review the report.

If it fails on the Fax Hardware section, unplug any phone cable from the printer, turn it off and back on and then run the test again without connecting it to your phone line.

Can you see any difference with the Fax Hardware test?

A such allow isolating, to better understand if it a  Fax hardware failure or a phone line failure.
