Apologies for asking such a rudimentary question. I am setting up scan to network folders and setup has asked for a filename prefix. What is it and where do I find it? Upgrading from 8600 which didn't ask this question, so I have the files already named.

Hello @JDJLacrosse ,
Welcome to the HP forum.
No need to apologise. It is a valid question.
When you scanned a document, from the front panel of your old 8600, It would save the file as scan0001.PDF.
The prefix used was scan.
The new software is just asking you what you would like the prefix to be.
It is meant to help you find scans, done from the front panel, easier.

Hi @ugie007,
It used to be a part of the naming convention with the old software. for Some reason, it is not available with the new software.
You would probably get a more detailed answer from phone support. www.hp.com/contacthp/

Doesn't explain that (1) you can manually enter a default file name under preferences and (2) how to reset the default to "scan0000x." You indicated that coding option isn't available. So, how do we get back to the default "scan0000x?"

Hey @DrNIck,
What printer do you have? Is it the OJ 8630 like the original poster? I would need to know so I can determine what software version you have in order to answer your question.
Thanks, I look forward to hearing back from you.

I don't understand your answer. I have a 1415fnw with whatever their latest firmware is.
I've scanned four documents and I'm trying to save them.
I get as far as "Prefix" and that's it, can't save my document.
Can you give me some click-by-click procedure to save my document? I can't think it would be too hard
I can't really use the 'contact HP customer support" because they need my serial number and I can't pick up the printer and wrestle with it, bad back.

Hello there HP, any luck with this? I couldn't save the scanned pages I wanted to and ended up taking a picture of the pages, which is better than nothing, but, seriously, what's going on?
I'm scanning from my computer...

Just adding "scan" as the prefix did NOT work. The entry box had nothing in it to begin with, so i tried first just adding scan inthe field, then adding a title and/or date after the prefix - as per examples in other solutions - and got nowhere. So your solution seem to me to be either worthless or incomplete.
