@phil117 Welcome to HP Community!
I understand that you are getting noise from the printer.
The issue with the carriage assembly.
In that case, I would suggest you contact our phone support and check for the support option. They will help you.
Or you can contact local service center for repair.
Here is how you can get in touch with phone support.
1)Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/
2)Select the product type.
3)Enter the serial number of your device or select let HP detect your product option.
4)Select the country from the drop-down.
5)You should see the HP phone support number or Chat option listed.
We are experiencing longer than expected wait times to reach an agent due to the CoViD-19 impact and there might have been issues in you getting the expected resolution on the issue.

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunatly i tried everything. I even disconected the small scanner motor and it seemed to have done the trick to print but although the printer now says it's ready to print, each time i try i get an error message unable to print on the pc. I tried win10 and old xp when i bought it. It is a quality machine and never used it much but it stood here for more of 10 years of un-used so despite a good service and clean, i guess it's time to say goodbye lol. I will buy a new hp one shortly just so i can work,....Thanks ever so much for your help.
Phil.
