This printer is both smarter than some "lesser models" and less smart than the top-tier OfficeJet Pro 9xxx models.
Smarter than some:
The printer - when a document is loaded in the ADF - can single-side scan the page(s) of that document.
Less Smart than others:
The aforementioned "single side" scan limitation means you have to scan one side, flip, scan the other side(s).
What you use to Scan depends on the apps / software you have available on your Device and Operating System / version.
Examples....
HP Smart (Windows and Mobile) supports Scan to PDF and Photo / Image
HP Smart tends to group pages together in one document.
You do have to scan and use Add Page(s) to complete multi-page and / or 2-sided documents.
There is no automatic reorder feature.
General Example - HP Smart (Windows) - Simple PDF Scan

Windows - Full Feature / full driver printer software installed
HP Scan includes a "2-sided (Manual)" option that guides you to scan first side(s) > reload paper > scan second side(s).
The document pages are re-ordered for you.
More > Destination includes (in sub-menu File Type) the mechanism to store the document pages as one file or as individual files.
