ENVY 7640
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

When I scan or copy from the feed tray, the copy has a bold vertical line down the middle of the page. Tried cleaning and aligning cartridges, but that hasn't helped.

Hello @Bella_2014

Welcome to the HP forums.

I understand that you are getting a black line on your printouts when scanning from the ADF of your 7640.

I would like to help.

I have not found a document for this particular printer, but here is a generic officejet version.

HP Officejet Flatbed Scanner All-in-Ones With ADFs - Vertical Bands, Lines, or Streaks in Copies, Fa...

The first step is universal to all scanners.

Solution one: Reset the All-in-One

If there is static interference, or loose connections with the product, this can result in bands or lines in the copy, fax, or scan output. To resolve this issue, check the product connections and reset the product.
  1. Make sure the product is on, and then disconnect the power cord from the product.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the product, and then disconnect it from the computer.
  3. Reconnect the USB cable to the computer, and then reconnect it securely to the product.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and then reconnect it to the wall outlet.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the product.
  6. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, see the next solution.

Solution two: Clean the All-in-One and make a blank copy

Before you begin, gather the following materials:
  • Several clean, soft, lint-free cloths
  • Mild glass cleaner

Use only glass cleaner to clean the scanner glass. Do not use cleaners that contain abrasives, acetone, benzene, or carbon tetrachloride. These substances can damage the product. Avoid isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) because it can leave streaks on the glass.

I suspect that the scanner glass is dirty.

Make a copy of a blank piece of paper.

This should come out with a line on it.

Next, Open the top of the printer to access the scanner glass.

7640 feeder glass.jpg

You will see a small strip of glass to the left of the scanner bed.

This is what captures the image when scanning through the feeder.

A small speck of dirt will look like a long black line down the scan.

Place the copy you just made on the scanner glass, this should show you where the dirt is.

Clean the strip of glass.

Then try to make another blank copy.

If the copy is line free, then everything is good.

If not, clean the glass again.

Please note: take a good look at the glass. Scratches and chips in the glass can cause quality defects too.

Hope this helps you.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

I tried the solutions you posted and still have the line.

I also tried the solution and it did not work. I noticed that the feeder creases the paper at the same spots where the vertical lines show up. Is there a way to adjust the feeder wheels so that they do nor crease the paper? That may be the solution.

I fixed it! I raised the scanner glass lid. To the left of the scanner glass there's a thinner glass that I believe covers the optics. I noticed white residue on the glass. I removed the residue with a moist paper towel. That did it for me.

I have tried the solutions you have posted and I still get a double line down the page.

I only get it when I use the auto feeder.

I have cleaned everything I can see and reach that is related to the auto feed function..

Any other suggestions?

I have a similar problem with my new HP Envy 7640. I get a vertical black line down the side of the page, BUT ONLY WHEN MAKING COPIES, even it I do not use the Autofeed. There is no black line when I print from the internet or from my hard drive. I have cleaned the glass, powered off/on, and I am using good paper. I have run the printer maintenance functions as well. I see no imperfection in the glass.

What is the solution?

Thanks so much for your reply. You may have missed my post that I had cleaned the optic glass and eliminated the problem. I would now like to close this discussion.

That didn't solve it, I tried everything I've read on this site and noting seems to work.
