I have never used the HP software before, I have always operated the printer from the front panel. On your suggestion, though, I did go looking for the HP software on my computor, found it, fired it up, and surprise, surprise: it scanned properly. So then I wondered, and tried the front panel scanning: and surprise, surprise again: it scans fine from the front panel. So I tried scanning that FEDEX receipt again and wonder of wonders: it scans fine.

 

So the printer got itself into some internal software loop or branch or something that caused it to crop out all text and only scan graphics images. But using the actual scanner software apparently broke that loop or branch, showing the printer the error of its ways, and put it back on the right scanner track.

 

Hopefully.

 

I'll keep working the problem to make sure it's actually working now. Normally, I don't use the software since I have to put the document on the printer, AT the printer, so why not initiate a scan while AT the printer, eh?

 

Thanks! We'll consider this one solved, at least for now. But something caused that printer to go off on its own like this and start auto-cropping while scanning whole documents.
