I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer, Product T0F29A. This is my first time trying out the fax function. I have a 2 part question:
1. Instructions says to use my information for the 'From' fields. Does that mean my cell number for the phone number and not an established fax number?
2. If I want to receive a fax, what number do I provide the sender?

I understand you’re setting up the fax function on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 and want clarity on the “From” field and receiving faxes. Let’s go through your questions step by step.
1. “From” Field Information
The “From” field is what appears on the recipient’s fax machine.
You can enter:
Your name (so they know who sent the fax).
A phone number.
Phone number guidance:
Ideally, you provide your landline or dedicated fax number.
If you don’t have one, you can enter your cell phone number, but the recipient may not be able to send a fax back to a cell number.
The printer does not require a traditional fax line to send, but a dedicated line ensures proper fax delivery and return.
2. Receiving a Fax
To receive faxes, your printer must be connected to a phone line (analog POTS line).
The number you provide to senders is the phone line your printer is connected to.
If you only have a cell phone, HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 cannot receive faxes over a cellular number—it needs a wired phone line.
If you want to receive faxes but don’t have a landline, you can use:
VoIP service with fax support, or
Online fax service that can forward faxes to email.
I hope this helps.
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" Your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨
