Hi @Bruce652,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the scanning issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6960.

Check Connections:

  • Ensure the Printer is Properly Connected: Confirm that your printer is connected to the same network as your computer. If you're using a USB connection, make sure the cable is securely plugged in.
  • Restart Devices: Turn off the printer, computer, and router. Wait for a minute, then turn them back on.

Update or Reinstall Drivers:

  • Update Drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your printer. You can download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
  • Reinstall Drivers: Uninstall the current drivers and software from your computer, then reinstall them. This can resolve any corruption or issues with the current installation.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Run HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility. This tool can diagnose and fix many scanning problems automatically.

Check Scan Settings:

  • HP Smart App or HP Scan Software: Use the HP Smart app or the HP Scan software to try scanning. Sometimes, the scanning functionality may not work through the default OS scanning tools but will work through HP's dedicated software.

Firewall/Security Software:

  • Disable Firewall Temporarily: Sometimes, firewall or security software can block the scanning function. Temporarily disable your firewall/security software to see if it resolves the issue.

Windows Services:

  • Check Windows Services: Ensure that the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service is running. This service is essential for scanning operations.

To check:

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" and ensure it is running. If not, right-click on it and select "Start."

Scan from Printer Control Panel:

  • Direct Scan: Try scanning directly from the printer's control panel. If it works, the issue may be with the software on your computer.

Check for Errors or Messages:

  • Error Messages: If your printer's display panel shows any error messages related to scanning, follow the instructions provided.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Firmware Update: Ensure that your printer firmware is up to date. You can update the firmware through the HP Smart app or by downloading the latest firmware from the HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
