Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm having a problem scanning 11x17 paper with the OfficeJet Pro 7740. I'm trying to do something like, and having the same problem as in a couple of other posts (HP 7740 scans 11x17 page as 17x8.5 and 11X17 scan cut off). In both of those cases, the solution from HP was to use A3 instead of 11x17. Ignoring the fact that this isn't a solution but a work-around, it doesn't work for my case. The document I'm scanning is a schematic with information right up to the edge of the paper. A3 paper is wider and shorter than 11x17 (tabloid), so I end up with an image with white space on the bottom and the left side cut off. Then when I try to print it, it is even more messed up because now it either has to be scaled to 11x17 (which makes it too small to read because of the white space), or use "actual size" where the top now gets cut off as well. Plus (and this is more an annoyance than anything) I can't just let the printer select the right paper because the document is A3.

Now for the second bug: When I do try to scan it using 11x17, I get the same thing as in the aforementioned posts (it tries to output 8.5x17 instead). If I try to modify the scan in the "Manage Images" tab, I see that the settings are correct, but the output is still wrong. But if I try to manually change the width (click on the box and then hit backspace, don't just highlight it and hit backspace) I end up in an inescapable loop where a message tells me "You must enter a number between 1.00 and 8.50 for Width", but when I try to exit the message, it sees that the width is still 11 and pops up with the message again (see the image below) until I finally force-quit the program.

These are clearly bugs, one of which breaks the program, so I hope that HP sees this and fixes the bugs which have obviously existed for two years now (based on the dates of the other posts). They were extremely responsive last time we found a bug, so lets hope they continue to impress me!

Using the HP Printer Assistant, Click on Scan, Then drop the box for Page Size and select custom.

In the Custom Scan Size you can enter the Width and Height.

Welcome to HP Community

Try updating the Printer Firmware from this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-7740-wide-format-all-in-one-printe... and then try scanning from the scanner glass and let me know if that works.

Keep me posted

Yes, I just confirmed that my print driver, firmware, and software are all up to date.

And yes, I'm telling it to use the scanner glass, I don't even have the option to scan 11x17 otherwise.

Thank you for the reply!

I suggest you try using the HP Smart App and the HP Scan and Capture and let me know it that helps

Hello, neither HP Smart nor HP Scan and Capture gives the option for 11x17. I select the source (scanner glass), then go to select page size, and there are only  is no option for tabloid or 11x17. See the first image below for a list of available sizes. I also tried using the "Entire Scan Area" option, and it can scan the entire document, but I cannot then crop the image to 11x17 (see the second image below, note that I had to block out the image). And if I try to use the "Custom" option, it lets me drag the corners, but I cannot enter the sizes so I cannot make it exact.

This works, thank you! Additionally I went into the post-scan settings and here I can adjust the settings that caused the problems in the original post.

But I'd still like to point out that this does not solve the original problem, it is just a workaround. The only true solution is to fix the software bug. The next time I go to scan an 11x17 document, am I going to remember that I cannot select "11x17" and instead have to select "custom" and enter "11x17"?

Thank you!

I'm glad you are able to scan now. I will take your feedback regarding the software bug and put it across to the concerned team

Hi,

Be aware that you may set the size as Custom and enter 11x17, then press the Disk icon near the shortcut name (e.g. Save as PDF) to save the shortcut settings, so you won't need to change it again the next time.

i'm having the same problem the last month or so. Can you elaborate on how you 'adjusted the settings that caused the original problem"? im looking around the post scan settings and cant figure out how to reset the 11x17 size to actually do 11x17.

Also, agreed, i hope HP stops issuing workarounds and actually fixes the bug. These responses are bogus.
