A previous post (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/When-Setting-up-Scan-to-Email-from-HP-Offi...) identified but did not solve the problem of a failure to recognise Outlook as the default email app.
While the specific app, HP Scan, does recognise Outlook as my mail server, HP Smart, which is the general app that loads with the printer, and which is the user interface presented automatically when the printer is connected, does not. I have checked all of my Window settings and they are all set to Outlook as the default mail server/app.
Most users will not be aware that they can download the more versatile HP Scan app and will try to persevere with HP Smart for their scanning. I suspect many will be having the same problem of HP Smart not giving Outlook as an option for emailing a scan and that this is a software fault with HP Smart.
Can HP fix this?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's update the Printer's firmware: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02919168
Let's remove and reinstall the HP Smart App.
Also, request you to reconfigure scan to email once you have completed the above steps.
Let me know if this helps.
If the information I've provided was helpful, give us some reinforcement by clicking the Accepted Solution button, that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Thanks!

Betty0610, thank you. My printer's firmware is up to date and I have uninstalled and reinstalled HP Smart App.
I am still not being offered Outlook as an email client, but only Microsoft Mail, even though Outlook is set as the default email app in Windows settings (see following image):.
There is no facility in the HP Smart App to add or change the email server, as there is in the HP Scan App.
This therefore appears to be a software glitch in HP Smart App.

Let's try the below suggestion, suggested by the team within HP.
We don’t have a specific shortcut in HP Smart for scan to email compare to HP Scan where you just need Outlook to perform it.
However, there were few alternative ways to do it. And here are some solution that we can recommend:
- Save the file then manually attached to email – Customer may not like this.
- Scan file and select Share. On Share option, we can do the following: Send the scan job in an email, share via social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, or save the scan in a cloud storage account, such as Box or OneDrive. You can also look for other apps in the Windows Store.
- Create a Smart Task and select email option. You may refer to support document on how to use Smart Task https://support.hp.com/sg-en/document/c06211157
Keep me posted.
Have a great day!
Cheers 🙂

@Raj1788, thank you. My response to the alternatives are:
1. Cumbersome and not efficient
2. This is the fundamental problem I have been raising all along - Share does not allow the user to nominate their own email server app, but simply gives Microsoft Mail as the email app to use (at least in my case) - it is not possible to configure HP Smart to include other email apps such as Outlook or Gmail, even if they are the user's default email app
3. Smart Tasks also do not give any choice of email app - it just defaults to Microsoft Mail again, and it would be necessary to set up a Smart Task for every different email recipient, which is also cumbersome
I think we have simply established that HP Smart (unlike HP Scan) does not allow the choice of email app, and does not recognise the user's default Windows setting for the email app to use. The only solution will be a software upgrade from HP. I would welcome that and look forward to it.
I regret therefore I cannot accept your responses as a solution to my problem.
Thank you for your responses in any event.
