HP Scan produces "old" PDF 1.3 files, which are incompatible with some 3rd party PDF viewers. Is there a way to configure "HP Scan" to create PDF v.1.6 files ?
EDIT:
Further checks imply that the produced PDF files (v.1.3) are not 100% compliant to the specification: they have a wrong XREF structure. This is the case for simple grayscale scans. As soon as we select "Searchable PDF", the resulting PDF level is v1.4, and conforms to the spec. For validation, I used the site pdf-online
Depending on the viewer used, such PDF v.1.3 files open with warnings or whatever. Hello HP: please fix it !

Please try this scan solution:
HP Scan Extended
For Windows: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

Hello sabretooth04 and others,
The "HP Scan Extended" solves the issue! All PDF output conforms to the standard. No more annoying warnings. Thanks a lot!
Even if the question in the title remains, I consider it as a solution, because all I was looking for was to to get PDFs compliant with the specification.
I only tested "Scan to PDF" and "Scan to Searchable PDF", with different resolutions. HP should integrate this bug fix into the standard distribution of HP Scan.
P.S. to other users: Using "HP Scan Extended", your custom scan profiles get lost, because they are saved in a slightly different location within %LOCALAPPDATA%
P.S. The file size of a "Searchable PDF" is ~50% smaller compared to a standard PDF. Probably due to the fact that the HP tool creates searchable PDFs with version 1.4, which might be more efficient than the very old version 1.3.
Again, thanks for your help
