HP 8710 printer:  Only way I can scan to PC is to use HP Smart.  That worked fine for about a year but now takes about 10 minutes to open, and then takes about five minutes of the rotating circle to start.  After that it works OK but very slowly.  So this is not practical to use.  Any suggestions?  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and HP Smart several times, with no improvement.

Welcome to the HP Community --

Having only one method or application to scan does make it tougher -- I'm not aware of your circumstances or which Operating System / version you are using, of course.

True - HP Smart Mobile is relatively limited in the number of fix-and-run solutions.  These are primarily centered around restarting your network and the standard uninstall/reinstall of the app.

Reminder

It is important that every device is using the latest version of the HP Smart app for that device type.

Check / Update >> Every device (computer(s) and mobile) where HP Smart is installed should be running the latest version of the HP Smart application available for that device platform (Operating System / Version).

AND

The printer and device (computer, tablet, phone) where HP Smart is running should be on the same network.

Relevant to supported versions of Windows

The HP Smart app (Windows) recently updated.

Current version at this writing:  151.1.1087.0

If the issue is related to the account data stored in HP Smart application, then Resetting the app can help.

>>> If you wish to do so, or you are not sure where the source of the problem is located, read / step through the first suggestions, else scroll down to section Reset HP Smart Application

That might be enough…

Stop if everything is now working.

Next,

Restart Everything, including the router that controls your network

That might be enough (at least short term) -- check...

Stop if everything is now working.

Next,

Windows

Check / Run Windows Updates > Install any pending updates

Next,

If not previously completed,

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network.

Can’t stand it?  Consider:  Restart computer(s) and printer.

Next,

Open and Check HP Smart

Stop if everything is now working.

If the HP Smart opens but does not work or hangs partly open:

Close the HP Smart App

If you cannot close HP Smart: Restart the computer and log in

Do not start the HP Smart yet.

No Joy?

I had tried all the suggestions several times each including troubleshooting the printer, resetting HP smart, uninstalling and re-installing, etc., but not resetting the modem.  So I did that, along with the PC and printer, also to no avail.  I have spent 7 hours today not counting several other days tiring to fix this.   When I look at task manager, it shows no activity for HP smart until (after about ten minutes) it progresses to the rotating circles (which did not take too long this time ... maybe five or ten seconds which is no problem).  But the long wait to start is not ok.

That's a lot of time and effort -- and it's odd that nothing can kick the app free.

True - Not OK.

There are application hooks deeper in Windows where we do not generally have access.

I've not run across anything (yet) that would point to where else in Windows to look, mostly because I've never had the app stick or hang to the point where I could not dig it out and get it working again.

If other apps and software continue to work as expected, for example, other printer apps and drivers, then sure -- it does appear the issue is something that affects the HP Smart's ability to interact with the Operating System.

Could be in the Registry -- I no longer give advice about editing the Registry.  Personal choice.  Others might not be so reticent.

Should I think of anything else, I'll post back and / or edit the sample page that outlines the how-to steps.

There are no problems with other apps.  And if I just print from my PC to the printer that works fine.  Only problem is getting HP Smart open to scan to PC without having to use a memory stick each time which is a hassle.  Once it opens it works great.
