I wanted to use the glass scanner to scan some document and observed:
------
1) When I open the HP app on an Apple MacBook Pro (M4 Pro). a pop-up appears with the message in the Subject. The only clickable button "Open permissions", when clicked, takes you to System Settings->Privacy & Security->Bluetooth, where HP is already enabled for the app.
2) Based on other posts online, I confirmed in System Settings->Privacy & Security->Local Network that HP is also enabled (seems to 2 entries enabled)
3) Checked System Settings->Printers & Scanners and the printer is reachable (Kind: HP ENVY 6400 series-AirPrint, Driver version 4.0). Yes, I can actually print a document, image etc)
---
The HP App seems the problem?
I re installed the App, toggled the "enables" in 1) and 2) above. The App does not show the familiar interface with ink levels etc.
Thanks for any advice you might have on how you got round this issue

Thanks for the detailed update @ojs1.
You’ve done an excellent job isolating the behavior and confirming the bundle ID as com.hp.SmartMac. That’s a key insight, especially with the dual entries now showing “HP” and “HP Smart” under Local Network permissions—suggesting remnants of the older HP Smart framework may still be lingering in the system.
Here’s how to move forward with precision:
1. Remove All HP App-Related Caches and Containers
Even after uninstalling the app, macOS may retain user-level data that interferes with permission registration.
Quit the HP App completely
Open Finder > Go > Go to Folder…
Enter each of the following paths and delete any HP or HP Smart folders found:
- ~/Library/Application Support/ ~/Library/Caches/ ~/Library/Containers/ ~/Library/Preferences/ ~/Library/Saved Application State/
Empty the Trash
Restart your Mac
Reinstall the HP App from the Mac App Store
2. Recheck Local Network Permissions
After reinstalling:
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network
- Confirm only one entry appears for “HP” or “HP Smart”
- Toggle it OFF and ON again
- Launch the HP App and allow all permission prompts
3. Try Scanning via HP App After Cleanup
Once the app is freshly installed and permissions are reset:
- Open the HP App
- Wait for the interface to load fully
- Try scanning from the glass bed
- If the interface still doesn’t show ink levels or scan options, proceed to the next step
4. Install Full HP Software Package
Instead of relying solely on the App Store version, download the full driver and utility suite:
- Visit the official HP ENVY 6400 Series Software for macOS
- Choose macOS 14 or 13 if Tahoe isn’t listed yet
- Download and install the full package
This may restore background services that the HP App relies on for full functionality.
You’ve already confirmed that AirPrint and Image Capture work smoothly, which means the printer and scanner are fully functional. The issue lies in how the HP App registers itself within macOS Tahoe’s privacy framework—and your methodical testing is bringing us closer to a clean resolution.

Hi @ojs1
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for sharing such a detailed breakdown—it’s clear you’ve already taken thoughtful steps to troubleshoot, and it’s frustrating when the app still doesn’t behave as expected. Let’s walk through a few focused actions that should help restore scanning and bring back the familiar interface.
The HP App may be stuck in a permission loop due to macOS 15’s updated privacy framework. Even if Local Network and Bluetooth permissions appear enabled, the app might not recognize them properly. Resetting permissions and clearing app data can help restore full functionality.
Steps to Resolve HP App Local Network Permission Issue on macOS 15
1. Reset HP App Permissions Using Terminal macOS 15 (Sequoia) introduced stricter privacy controls, and sometimes permissions appear enabled but don’t register correctly. You can reset them using Terminal:
Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities.
Run the following command:
- tccutil reset All com.hp.HPApp
This resets all permissions for the HP App.
Restart your Mac and reopen the HP App. You should be prompted again for permissions—accept them when prompted.
2. Remove Duplicate App Entries
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
- If you see multiple entries for HP, remove the app completely:
- Delete the HP App from Applications.
- Empty the Trash.
- Reinstall the HP App from the Mac App Store: HP App on Mac App Store
3. Confirm Printer Is Added via AirPrint
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- If your printer shows as “HP ENVY 6400 series – AirPrint,” it’s using Apple’s built-in driver.
- For full HP App functionality, install the full software package: HP ENVY 6400 Series Software for macOS
4. Check Firewall Settings
- Go to System Settings > Network > Firewall.
- Ensure the firewall isn’t blocking incoming connections for the HP App.
5. Try Scanning via Image Capture
- Open Image Capture from Applications.
- Select your printer from the sidebar and try scanning from the glass bed.
- This bypasses the HP App and confirms scanner functionality.
You’ve already done a great job isolating the issue, and these steps should help the HP App reconnect properly with your printer and restore the full interface.
Let me know if you’d like help locating the exact driver package or if you’d prefer scanning alternatives while the app stabilizes. You’re very close to getting everything working just the way you want.

Thank-you for your clear instructions.
I walked through them in the numerical order you outlined.
BTW, currently my MacBook M4 Pro is running macOS "Tahoe 26.0.1" (Believe macOS Sequoia is macOS 15).
I used to use the "hp smart" interface quite seamlessly on my older 2016 mac running "macOS 12".
If I remember right, the "hp smart" app was updated to "hp.app" after the migration.
1. Reset HP App Permissions Using Terminal
% tccutil reset All com.hp.HPApp
==> tccutil: No such bundle identifier "com. hp.HPApp": The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -10814.)
... Looks like the "com.hp.*" components are not installed.
... Even after trashing the Hp.app from /Applications, downloading from the AppStore and invoking HP.app, The same tccutil error message appears. I did a disk search and no "com.hp.*" comes up.
2. Remove Duplicate App Entries
... The 2 HP permissions under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network faithfully reappear "ON", each time the app is installed. I tried multiple "trash" + "download from the AppStore"
3. Confirm Printer Is Added via AirPrint
... Printing and Scanning via Apple's "AirPrint" and "Image Capture.app" utilities continue to work seamlessly.
4. Check Firewall Settings
... Checked System Settings > Network > Firewall that HP App is not blocked from incoming connections.
.. Also, 'Automatically allow downloaded signed software to receive incoming connections switch is "ON"'
Hope this provides a limore insight.
Let me know if you want me to try something else.
Thank-you in advance.

I appreciate all your efforts and patience @ojs1
Thank you for such a clear and thoughtful follow-up. Your insights—especially around macOS “Tahoe” and the HP App’s behavior—are incredibly helpful. You’ve already done a meticulous job isolating the issue, and it’s clear the app isn’t registering its permissions correctly at the system level.
Based on your findings, here’s what I recommend next:
1. Confirm the App’s Bundle Identifier
Since tccutil returned an error, it’s likely the HP App’s bundle ID has changed in the latest macOS release. You can verify it using Terminal:
- Open Terminal and run:
osascript -e 'id of app "HP"' - This should return the correct bundle identifier (e.g., com.hp.HPApp or a variation).
- Once you have the correct ID, retry:
tccutil reset All [bundleID]
2. Check App Behavior in Console
- Open Console.app from Applications > Utilities.
- Launch the HP App and observe logs for any permission-related errors or sandbox violations.
- This can reveal if the app is failing to request access properly or if macOS is blocking it silently.
3. Try a Clean User Profile
- Create a new user account on your Mac:
- System Settings > Users & Groups > Add User
- Log into the new account and install the HP App.
- This bypasses any cached permissions or corrupted user-level settings.
4. Use HP’s Full Software Package (If Available)
- Visit: HP ENVY 6400 Series Software for macOS
- Download the full installer (not just the App Store version).
- This may include background services or helper tools that restore full scanning functionality.
You’ve already confirmed that AirPrint and Image Capture work flawlessly, which means the printer and scanner hardware are fully functional. The issue is isolated to the HP App’s interface and permission registration—likely a mismatch between macOS Tahoe’s privacy framework and the app’s current bundle structure.
Let me know what bundle ID you find or if you’d like help interpreting Console logs. You’re navigating this with precision, and we’re close to unlocking the full interface again.

Hello @Hawks_eye.
1. Confirm the App’s Bundle Identifier
-- Running the Applescript identified the bundle
% osascript -e 'id of app "HP"'
== com.hp.SmartMac
% tccutil reset All com.hp.SmartMac
== Successfully reset All approval status for com.hp.SmartMac
%
-- Invoking the HP app displays the previous "Enable Local Network permissions for the HP app", Bluetooth "enabled" and double entry for "HP" in the "Local Network" window
2. Check App Behavior in Console
-- Does not show anything in the log related to HP .. .. searched for the string "hp" (case-insensitive)
-- So I'll try out Steps 3. and 4 and get back, this evening (PDT).
Thanks for your help and guidance

Hello @Hawks_Eye
My product being "HP ENVY 6455e" (not the PRO).
I looked for "HP ENVY 6400e All-In-One Printer series" software" (for macOS version Tahoe 26.0.1 (or 16)). Apparently none seems available at the moment for Mac.
Perhaps I should wait until a release is available .. since my Printer and Scanner is working with the Apple utilities.
BTW, Is there a downloadable utility to clean up previous "com.hp.*" resources under ~/Library ?
Thank-you,
ojs1
