I wanted to use the glass scanner to scan some document and observed: 

------

1) When I open the HP app on an Apple MacBook Pro (M4 Pro). a pop-up appears with the message in the Subject. The only clickable button "Open permissions", when clicked, takes you to System Settings->Privacy & Security->Bluetooth, where HP is already enabled for the app.

2) Based on other posts online, I confirmed in System Settings->Privacy & Security->Local Network that HP is also enabled (seems to 2 entries enabled)

3) Checked System Settings->Printers & Scanners and the printer is reachable (Kind: HP ENVY 6400 series-AirPrint, Driver version 4.0). Yes, I can actually print a document, image etc)

The HP App seems the problem?

I re installed the App, toggled the "enables" in 1) and 2) above. The App does not show the familiar interface with ink levels etc.

Thanks for any advice you might have on how you got round this issue

2. Remove Duplicate App Entries

  • Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
  • If you see multiple entries for HP, remove the app completely:
    • Delete the HP App from Applications.
    • Empty the Trash.
    • Reinstall the HP App from the Mac App Store: HP App on Mac App Store

 

3. Confirm Printer Is Added via AirPrint

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • If your printer shows as “HP ENVY 6400 series – AirPrint,” it’s using Apple’s built-in driver.
  • For full HP App functionality, install the full software package: HP ENVY 6400 Series Software for macOS

 

4. Check Firewall Settings

  • Go to System Settings > Network > Firewall.
  • Ensure the firewall isn’t blocking incoming connections for the HP App.

 

5. Try Scanning via Image Capture

  • Open Image Capture from Applications.
  • Select your printer from the sidebar and try scanning from the glass bed.
  • This bypasses the HP App and confirms scanner functionality.

I walked through them in the numerical order you outlined.

 

BTW, currently my MacBook M4 Pro is running macOS "Tahoe 26.0.1" (Believe macOS Sequoia is macOS 15).

I used to use the "hp smart" interface quite seamlessly on my older 2016 mac running "macOS 12".

If I remember right, the "hp smart" app was updated to "hp.app" after the migration.

 

1. Reset HP App Permissions Using Terminal

tccutil reset All com.hp.HPApp

==> tccutil: No such bundle identifier "com. hp.HPApp": The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error -10814.)

... Looks like the "com.hp.*" components are not installed.

... Even after trashing the Hp.app from /Applications, downloading from the AppStore and invoking HP.app, The same tccutil error message appears. I did a disk search and no "com.hp.*" comes up.

 

2. Remove Duplicate App Entries

... The 2 HP permissions under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network faithfully reappear "ON", each time the app is installed. I tried multiple "trash" + "download from the AppStore"

 

3. Confirm Printer Is Added via AirPrint

... Printing and Scanning via Apple's "AirPrint" and "Image Capture.app" utilities continue to work seamlessly.

 

4. Check Firewall Settings

... Checked System Settings > Network > Firewall that HP App is not blocked from incoming connections.

.. Also, 'Automatically allow downloaded signed software to receive incoming connections switch is "ON"'

== Successfully reset All approval status for com.hp.SmartMac

-- Invoking the HP app displays the previous "Enable Local Network permissions for the HP app", Bluetooth "enabled" and double entry for "HP" in the "Local Network" window

 

2. Check App Behavior in Console

-- Does not show anything in the log related to HP .. .. searched for the string "hp" (case-insensitive) 

 

-- So I'll try out Steps 3. and 4 and get back, this evening (PDT).

My product being "HP ENVY 6455e" (not the PRO).

I looked for "HP ENVY 6400e All-In-One Printer series" software" (for macOS version Tahoe 26.0.1 (or 16)). Apparently none seems available at the moment for Mac.

Perhaps I should wait until a release is available .. since my Printer and Scanner is working with the Apple utilities.

 

BTW, Is there a downloadable utility to clean up previous "com.hp.*" resources under ~/Library ?
