Hi @LazyBoy95,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

High RAM usage while using the HP Smart app for scanning with your HP Deskjet 4255e can be frustrating. This issue has been reported by other users and may stem from a few potential factors.

  • App Version and Updates: Ensure that you are using the latest version of the HP Smart app, as updates often include performance improvements and bug fixes. You can check for updates on the Microsoft Store or your device's app store.
  • Background Processes: The HP Smart app might be conflicting with other applications or background processes on your system. Try closing other applications while using HP Smart to see if that alleviates the RAM usage issue.
  • Driver Issues: Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP support website specifically for your printer model.
  • System Resources: Check if your computer is running low on resources overall. If other programs are consuming a lot of memory, it might lead to high RAM usage when you try to scan.
  • Scan Settings: Adjusting the scan settings in the app (like resolution and file format) may also help reduce memory usage during scanning.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

The app and PC are updated, so are the drivers. My laptop has 16gb of RAM, and there is no reason at all for one app that works with a printer to take 9 gigabytes of RAM. My scan settings weren't the lowest but they weren't the highest either.

Hi @LazyBoy95,

Thank you for your response,

If you're experiencing high RAM usage with the HP Smart app while scanning documents, here are some additional troubleshooting steps and considerations you can try.

App Reinstallation

  • Uninstall the HP Smart app completely, then reinstall it from the Microsoft Store. This can resolve issues caused by corrupted files or settings.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Ensure your operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, Windows updates can improve app performance and compatibility.

Limit Background Applications

  • In addition to closing other applications, you can check your Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see if any background processes are using significant RAM. Consider disabling unnecessary startup programs to free up resources.

Scan in Smaller Batches

  • If you’re scanning multiple pages, try scanning them in smaller batches instead of one large job. This can help manage memory usage better.

Alternative Scanning Methods

  • If the HP Smart app continues to be problematic, consider using the built-in Windows Fax and Scan tool or the Windows Scanner app. These may use less memory and still provide the functionality you need.

Use Different File Formats

  • If you haven’t already, experiment with saving scans in different file formats (e.g., JPG instead of PDF) to see if it impacts memory usage.

Check Resource Monitor

  • Use the Resource Monitor (accessible via Task Manager) to get a more detailed view of what is consuming RAM. This can help you identify if other processes are contributing to the high usage.

Consider Hardware Limitations

  • Ensure that your laptop's RAM is functioning correctly. Sometimes faulty RAM can lead to unexpected behavior, so running a memory diagnostic tool can be beneficial.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify the cause of the high RAM usage or at least find a workaround.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
