OfficeJet Pro 7740
Linux

There doesn't seem to be a Linux driver specific to the 7740. Printer installation offered to use the driver "HP Officejet Pro 6830, hpcups 3.16.3"

That driver provides most functions, but it does not allow me to print to A3 and it is not recognised as a scanner.

The lack of A3 functionality probably results from the 6830 having a maximum print size of A4.

The lack of scanning ability suggests that the 6830 and 7740 use different scanning protocols

Is there a driver that I can select, that will allow me to use my 7740 scan, and/or to print A3?

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

POSTSCRIPT: I resolved the issues by installing an updated version of HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

First , your printer needs to be  connected to your network.

1. Touch on the Wireless icon on the printer front panel.

2. Select Settings (gear icon)

3. Select Wireless Settings

4. If it's not turned on - turn it ON

5. Then select Wireless Setup Wizard.

6. Follow the instructions to connect your printer to the network.

This example will show you how (it's a different printer but will give you an idea how to do it)

Connecting a printer to network using Wireless Setup Wizard

Next you need to add your printer, please watch this example on how to add printer:

How to add printer on Ubuntu  16.04LTS

(If no drivers available, can check if there are  drivers for Officejet 7510, Officejet 7612? These are A3 printers)

Finally, watch these videos on how to scan using Webscan (note the example is on Chromebook but it applicable on Ubuntu as well!)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the good advice, Greenturtle.

That was approximately the process that I went through to install the printer.

However the A3 and scan functions did not work until I installed an up-to-date version of HPLIP.

Everything seems to now work fine.

How did you resolve the problem? My 7740 doesn't work with A3, either with hplip 3.17.10.

Did you launch hp-doctor?

The driver (ppd file) currently containend in HPLIP 2.17.10 is incomplete and among other things does not give the possibility of selecting which tray to use.

This is annoying because there has already been a fix (as mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1649550?comments=all) which consists in a new ppd file, but although this was committed in December 2016, it did not make it to all releases issued in the whole 2017.

The printer is OK, but I buy HP only for its support to Linux (5 printers to date only at home, 2 currently online, without counting those at work) - and yes, also at work we use Linux but we have opted for laser printers there. I do not use windows and I do not want to use windows. Please fix the errors.
