HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

While scanning documents with my HP7740 - Wide Format - All in One printer,  it stopped and immediately began an update.

Immediately after that update I was unable to 'Scan to Computer' with my MAC.

'Scan to Computer' has been an amazing option and find it far quicker to use than having to use the HP Smart App.

Is anyone else having the same issues and does anyone know if this is just a temporary issue with Hewlett Packard or is this now the new permanent norm for HP.

If there is a fix to this problem please let me know.

Personally,  I'm extremely disappointed and frustrated that this could be HP's way of forcing people into using their Smart App.

Hi @Keith-7740,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To get "Scan to Computer" to work on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer with your Mac, you'll need to set up the printer and configure the scanning settings properly. Here are the general steps to do this.

Connect the Printer:

  • Make sure your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac.

Install HP Software:

  • Ensure you have the necessary HP software and drivers installed on your Mac. If not, you can download and install them from the HP website. Make sure you select the correct software for your printer model and Mac OS version.

Enable Scan to Computer:

  • On the printer's control panel, press the "Wireless" or "Network" button to access the wireless settings.
  • Navigate to "Scan to Computer" or a similar option. Enable it.

Configure Scan Settings:

  • Open the HP Utility application on your Mac. You can usually find it in the Applications folder or by searching for "HP Utility" in Spotlight.

Add the Printer:

  • In the HP Utility, click on "Scan to Computer" or "Manage Scan to Computer" (the exact wording may vary depending on your printer model).
  • Click the "Add" button to add your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 to the list of available scanners.

Test Scanning:

  • Place a document or photo on the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
  • Use the HP Utility or another scanning application on your Mac to initiate a scan. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Scan to Computer Preferences:

  • In some cases, you may need to configure the scan preferences such as scan file format, destination folder, and other settings. This can usually be done in the HP Utility or through the printer's control panel.

Scan from the Printer:

  • On your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, you should now be able to initiate scans directly to your Mac by selecting the "Scan to Computer" option on the printer's control panel.

Remember that the exact steps and options may vary slightly depending on the printer's firmware and your Mac's operating system version. Ensure that your Mac and printer are running the latest firmware and software updates for the best compatibility.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Alden4 for responding,

I spoke with a person by the name of Venu at HP Support on Sept.29/23 and after an extremely lengthy keyboard conversation I was informed that the update that I received on Sept.28/23 has discontinued 'Scan to Computer' for MAC.

I am sure that it was the update because I was in the process of scanning when the scanning process I was doing was stopped and a printer update began.

Immediately after the update was completed I was unable to 'Scan to Computer'.

This is by far not the first time this has happened, however in the past I have been able to go into HP Utilities and turn "Scan to Computer' back on.

I have also looked into the HP Embedded Web page and it indicates that 'Scan to Computer' is unavailable and that the issue is with the setup of the printer.

Hp's Embedded web browser indicates that it has been disabled at the printer.....I did not disable it. It was in my opinion, logically that the update that had just occurred disabled it. ****(Screen shot attached)

I cannot locate any area on the Printer screen that indicates that 'Scan to Computer' is an option or the ability to turn it on or off.

HP Embedded Web Server.png

When I click on Scan and then click on Computer from the printer Control Panel it states:

Mac OS X: The HP recommended software is required for this feature. If installed, open HP Utility. Under "Scan Settings", click 'Scan to Computer', and ensure that 'Enable Scan to Computer' is selected.

When I open HP Utility and I click on Device Information it initially shows the HP 7740 Printer Info then a window pops up that says connecting to device then all the Device Information that was shown changes to Unknown.

There is nothing in HP Utility that even indicates scan of any kind as an option unlike I used to see when I had issues like this in the past.  Typically when this would occur I would just need to go back into HP Utility and verify the 'Scan to Computer' was enabled. It seemed like in the past with occasional printer updates that it would disable 'Scan to Computer' automatically. (This also happened with previous printers I have had.)

In HP Utility just above Device Information there is a black area with an exclamation point at the beginning of the window and beside it states: "Unable to communicate with the selected device. It may have been turned off, or otherwise disconnected".

(The printer is not turned off and or disconnected) and as previously stated I was scanning to the computer at the time this update stopped allowing me to scan and went directly into printer update mode. *****(Screen shots attached)

I will add that I can scan through HP's Smart App however I just really do not want to use the Smart App.

I can also scan using HP's Image Capture App.

Although both of these options can work and proves that the printer scans to the computer through a different avenue and that it all works through Wi-Fi without interruptions I find for me this process to be considerably more cumbersome and lengthy.

I have used HP Printers for many, many years and using the 'Scan to Computer' option has worked extremely well for me. I prefer to scan directly into the Recents folder in Finder and then do as I wish with the scanned documents or otherwise from there.

Also, early on when trying to diagnose this problem I had verified at the time of this printer issue that both the printer and my Mac had the most recent updates.

Referring back to when I stated I was speaking with Venu at HP Support on Sept. 29/23, according to Venu who seemed to be checking into a number of possible factors and or with other support agents told me at the end of a very lengthy conversation that:

HP Support Agent, 1:07 PM
Keith unfortunately the feature is not available for the MAC computers, I sincerely apologize for that.

HP Support Agent, 1:15 PM
Generally MAC has restrictions and as it updated to latest version it doesn't allow to scan to computer Keith.

NOTE:

At the end of the conversation I did a quick search into an HP Support Forum and I found the following, then copied and pasted it into the conversation:

Customer, 1:28 PM

I just found this....Was really happy with my old HP7740 printer but had to leave it behind and bought a 9020 to replace it on the basis that the feature description said that it had "scan to computer".
It arrived yesterday and since then I have found that not only does does it not have this feature (for mac os at least), it is also not recognised by the HP utility. Found two threads with workarounds but cannot get the scan to network folder to work - just keep getting wrong credentials error nor the scan to email where I get a network error message. This feature worked so well on my other unit and was a big factor in buying this one - both work arounds are not ideal but I could live with them if they worked - however for me they don't seem to.
Anybody have other ideas that might make this work or will HP ever just issue a proper driver for this printer?
Please help as it is driving me
nuts...
Thks.

To end Alden4, if there is something that you can do and or think of that can contradict the above and allow me to get back to using 'Scan to Computer' then I would be greatly appreciative. If you are unable then I thank you for trying and your time.

I am unsure if this is a Mac (Apple) thing or an HP thing or if other printer companies even follow the same trend but I can tell you that I bought this printer knowing that I did not have to sign up for the 123 Smart App. and that I could use 'Scan to Computer' as an option.

****I have added screen shots that support my notes above.

I have been an HP user and supporter for a great many years and have been quite pleased with their performance and am now thinking that I may need to look deeper and possibly rethink my printer supporter.

Thank you for your time and look forward to hearing back from you.

Have a good day.

Hey Alden4,

Once again I appreciate you response.

I am completely ok with contacting HP Support provided I can actually speak with someone. If I have to do like previously and communicate with a computer and or keyboard communication then no.  This process is life draining to say the least. Yesterday I spent 2 hours just communicating with Venu and went nowhere and at the end of the conversation I was told that due to HP's update the option was no longer available....frustrating.

I also spent a great deal of time speaking to what seemed like automated computer and had to eventually disconnect because it was so frustrating to be understood regarding my situation.

If by clicking on the link you provided allows me to actually speak with someone then I am totally committed.

Hi Keith

I also have encountered the same issue as you. After much uninstalling/reinstalling and realising that it is HP that has taken this feature away - I am really peeved!

This was an excellent feature, just wondering if you have had any progress with HP?

Angela.

Hey Angela,

I have not had any resolution through HP or otherwise.

The portion of my communication has a NOTE from another individual that encountered the issue but was with the same printer as I have, the HP Officejet 7740 Wide Format All in One printer but when he realized that he was unable to 'Scan to Computer' from the particular printer he returned it and purchased another printer that would allow 'Scan to Computer'.

I believe the one he replaced it with was also HP but I would have to go back and check his note.

Like you I am extremely Peeved. I only purchased this printer less than an year ago and specifically got it because I did not have to use HP's smart app and I could 'Scan to Computer" and of course I like the double sided ADF.

I have found that each time I buy a newer printer there are more and more issues.  Maybe HP is not the path of printers to follow anymore.

One of the HP Agents I had spoke with gave me the impression that it had something to do with Apple and there restrictions....I'm just not buying it. So with that I am going to check in with Apple directly and get a response from them on what the issue is and who the problems sits with.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes I have the 7740 Officejet Pro (really can we call it that anymore!).

I believe when HP updated the drivers for the machines they have chosen to not "work in with software providers".

Annoying and I am not keen on purchasing a replacement as the goal posts could shift again.

I checked back to the other individuals circumstance.

He purchased the HP 7740 model and returned it because the Scan to Computer was not an option.

He in turn purchased the HP 9020 model because in indicated that it in fact had the Scan to Computer availability.

He even had big issues with HP Utility.

When he got it home he was unable to get the Scan to Computer to work as in fact it was no longer available.

So like you say no doubt HP is not fulfilling the needs of Mac.

Extremely disappointing.

It is my opinion that HP is pushing everyone to there Smart App. This App is a collection of Data for them in a big way is my understanding.

Anyway, good luck going forward.

Hey Angela,

Unsure about your complete situation other than you are having 'Scan to Computer' issues as well.

I did as I said and spoke with an agent at Apple today regarding what HP Support had told me, ie: HP is not supporting Mac any further.

Although it didn't make any sense and or logic to me, not to mention the amount of monies I put into this printer I had to make an inquiry directly.

The agent completely agreed with my sense and logic approach.

What he said was that it's very well possible that because I am only running MacOS Catalina v.10.15 that HP is not supporting drivers for the older MacOS.

I have an older MacBook Pro, although I know I need to upgrade I am holding out as long as possible. If the OS is the issue means I may not be able to hold out quite as long as I would like to.

Security issues could also be an issue with the older OS.

What are the chances that the agent I spoke with at HP misunderstood the Mac issue to mean all Mac as opposed to older MacOS....(this makes more sense)

Anyway I wanted to bring you up to speed while understanding your frustration as well.

I going to have to find the time to get on the phone with HP and sort out the confusion. My only hope is this time hopefully I can actually speak with someone rather that sitting here typing with another agent for another two hours.

Hope this helps!!
