Thanks for visiting the HP community. A very good day to you! I will be glad to assist you and let’s get right to it. Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue. It is amply appreciated.
Let me gather some information for better clarity to assist you correctly:
- Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
- Does the printer make photocopies directly without any computer intervention?
- Is it a wireless or USB connection?
- Does it give you any errors while scanning?
.I will be providing a roadmap with some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Let us try these steps:
- It looks like a hardware issue with the printer. It may need to be replaced. I am being honest about it by keeping your best interest in mind.
- Perform a hard reset on the printer by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-envy-4520-all-in-one-printer-series/5447920/document/c004898... Check the section “Step 1: Reset the printer”
Then update the printer’s firmware by following instructions from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16 - Use a USB cable to update the printer’s firmware.
If it continues, then try these steps:
Make 2 photocopies directly from the printer without any communication from the MacBook. If it copies correctly then perform these steps::
Remove and add the printer by following directions from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-envy-4520-all-in-one-printer-series/5447920/document/c042493... (HP Printers - Printer is Offline (Mac)
- Step 3: Remove multiple printers from the printer list
- Step 4: Delete the existing print queue and add the printer
- Just that when you delete the printer. Make sure to add the printer as Apple AirPrint or Secure AirPrint and nothing else. (Don’t add it as an HP printer. This is important.)
- This should fix the issue for you.
If the issue persists, then perform all the relevant steps one at a time from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-envy-4520-all-in-one-printer-series/5447920/document/c048896... (HP Printers - Network Scanner Connection Error (Mac)
- Except that add the printer always as Apple AirPrint or Secure AirPrint and not as an HP printer.
- Don't download and install any driver from the HP support site as this printer supports Apple AirPrint.
- Try scanning from other devices like a Windows-based computer or an iPhone or iPad to isolate the issue further.
- Try scanning with Apple Image Capture and the link shows you how.
- Try scanning with HP AirPrint and the FAQs section gives information regarding this.
- This should nail it for you.
If the printer is connected to the Mac via a USB connection then follow directions from this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-envy-4520-all-in-one-printer-series/5447920/document/c048041... (HP Printers - USB Scanner Connection Error (Mac)
Remember to remove and add the printer only as Apple AirPrint and nothing else.
- If it fails to copy, then the printer needs to be replaced. I am being honest about it by keeping your best interest in mind here.
- I will send you a private message to assist you with the next course of action.
- Check your forum private message box in the upper right corner next to the bell icon.
Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
