I refuse to keep uninstalling and installing this freaking software.  I am able to print.  I installed HP Smart years ago. I am unable to scan. I keep getting driver check not completed.  Other than take a hammer to this machine and buy a printer from another company I don't know what else to do.  I've done everything suggested and can even print from the HP Smart commands - I just want to know how to fix the scan problem so I can scan documents to my computer.

Update / Edits >> Add Information > TCP/IP connection

There might actually be a "disconnect" -

If you have not done so,

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network.

What else?

Check the printer itself - try a Reset / Restart

Check the Firmware

> Change the connection type to TCP/IP

Reinstall software - this time add the Check and Remove Section as described later in this message

Go...

The printer itself might be stuck - doubtful since you can print, but scanning is very resource intensive, so "maybe".

If you have not done so,

Printer Turns Off Unexpectedly or Repeatedly

Step 2 - Restart the printer

Wow - this was a very thorough response.  Thank you for taking the time to add all the possibilities.  I am not technology savvy so it was a lot to digest.

After more than 4 hours of messing with the instructions I ended up reinstalling HP Smart and the drivers.  That seemed to work and I'm now able to scan.

What I really and truly wish would happen is that we get notification there are updates to the drivers from HP.  I'm tired of going through this every time they update their software.  It's not the first time - just the first time I went to the community because of course I have no warranty remaining and I refuses to pay HP another penny.  I will never buy another HP product again.  That's my ultimate solution.

@coacheuc

You are welcome.

True - A complete removal and reload of the printer software frequently resolves spurious issues of this type.

I am glad it's fixed.

What?

Windows Updates and other changes in Windows can play havoc with any installed software - the extent to which this is true depends on how thoroughly the particular software is integrated into the Windows OS  File System.

Printer software is more vulnerable to File System changes than a completely self-contained program.

Caveat

Not sure whether HP Alerts would catch a simple printer software driver update.

I generally check (manually) for a new printer software version if I need to reload the printer software.

========================================================================

What else?

HP Support Assistant might properly check for "printer software updates" -- it is, in fact, supposed to do this.

That said, the HPSA usually works but might catch you unaware and try to install an update when you don't want it done.

Auto Updates can be disruptive - particularly if the "update" is a BIOS update - these fussy updates are risky at any time.

So - choice:  Check for a new printer software version when you need it or let the HPSA try and take care of it.

My personal choice:
Leave HPSA installed but switch OFF the Automatic Updates feature so the HPSA doesn't try to sneak in an "update" my running system when I don't want it done.

Regardless, HPSA is a separate subject and one you can ask the Community about if you decide to do so.
