Hi @NortonGranites,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're encountering issues with scanning on your HP LaserJet M1136 MFP and seeing messages like "Couldn't Connect to scanner," there are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to resolve this problem:
1. Basic Checks and Preparations
Verify Connections: Ensure that your HP LaserJet M1136 MFP is properly connected to your computer via USB cable or connected to your network if you are scanning over the network.
Restart Devices: Restart both your computer and the printer. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues.
2. Check Scanner Settings
HP Scan Software: Make sure you have installed the correct HP scanning software for your printer. You can download the latest software and drivers from the HP support website specifically for the LaserJet M1136 MFP.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor: This tool can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility to check for issues and follow the prompts to fix any problems found.
3. Verify Firewall and Antivirus Settings
- Firewall Settings: Sometimes, firewall settings can block the communication between the computer and the printer. Temporarily disable the firewall (or create an exception for the HP scanning software) to see if it resolves the issue.
4. Check Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service
- Restart WIA Service:
- Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services window.
- Scroll down and locate "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service.Right-click on it and select Restart.
5. Update or Reinstall Drivers
Update Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your HP LaserJet M1136 MFP. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest drivers and software.
Reinstall Drivers: If updating doesn’t resolve the issue, uninstall the current drivers and software completely, then reinstall them from scratch.
6. Check for Hardware Issues
Physical Connections: Ensure that the USB cable (if used) is securely connected to both the printer and the computer. Try using a different USB port on your computer.
Scanner Hardware: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the scanner itself. Contact HP Support for further assistance or to schedule a repair.
7. Check Scanner Status
- Scanner Settings: On your computer, open the HP scanning software or HP Smart app, and check if the scanner is recognized and listed. Ensure it’s selected as the default scanner.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
