The problem was in the credentials not being accepted - a solution given to me (elsewhere with HP) was to go to windows settings and add another user and then share the folder using that account & its credentials created.
Click the link for I don't have this person's sign-in information to do this
Then click/add a user without a Microsoft account
Create a username and password

Use these new details when adding a folder on the HP app.

Hi @peterh36,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
The “Incorrect credentials” error when scanning to a network folder from your HP Smart Tank 7605 All-in-One usually means the printer is unable to authenticate with the shared folder on your Windows 11 PC.
Let’s walk through Step-by-Step Fix: Scan to Network Folder
1. Confirm Folder Sharing Settings
On your Windows 11 PC:
- Right-click the folder you want to scan to → Properties.
- Go to the Sharing tab → Click Share…
- Add “Everyone” or your Windows user account and set permission to Read/Write.
- Click Share, then Done.
2. Note the Network Path
Still in the folder’s Properties > Sharing tab:
- Copy the Network Path (e.g., \\YourPCName\Scans).
- You’ll need this for the printer setup.
3. Enable Password-Protected Sharing
- Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings
- Under All Networks, make sure:
- Password-protected sharing is ON
- Your PC is on a Private network
4. Use Correct Credentials on the Printer
When setting up the scan-to-folder on the printer or via the HP Smart app or the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Username: Your Windows login name (e.g., JohnDoe or JohnDoe@outlook.com)
- Password: Your Windows login password (or PIN if that’s what you use)
⚠️ If you use a Microsoft account to log in, use the full email address and password.
5. Set Up Scan to Network Folder
You can do this via:
- HP Smart App > Printer Settings > Scan > Network Folder
- Or access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Find the printer’s IP address on its control panel
- Enter it in your browser (e.g., http://192.168.1.100)
- Go to Scan > Network Folder Setup
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
