Have been using HP Smart with this printer for a number of years.  Today I tried to scan using the document feeder and could not get a usable image.  Thought it was a HP Smart problem so I uninstalled and reinstalled HP Smart.  Got the same results.  I then tried to scan by placing the document on the scanner glass and everything worked fine.  I am guessing my document feeder has gone bad.  Am I correct?

Sure, it's possible the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) is "giving out".

IF you have not already done so...

Perhaps as likely, because the parts on the printer is fairly robust, the printer ADF just needs a good cleaning.

Known solutions are presented in the order to be considered / completed:

HP ENVY 7640, OfficeJet 5740, 8040 Printers - 'Out of Paper' Displays and Printer Does Not Pick Pape...

Some notes...

Pay attention to section  Solution three: Clean the paper feed and pick rollers

Do not skip the "optional" Step 3

Hint:  Be sure the printer is OFF.  If the ADF lid won't open at all, unplug the printer and try again - the lid can be stubborn.  Too much force, of course, will break the mechanism - try firm yet gentle pressure to lift.

Solution four: Reset the printer

This is different from switching the printer off and then possibly unplugging it.

The "reset" option is actually done with the printer left ON.

Same Issue here, at about the same time.  ADF works fine, feeds sheets fine, and does multiple sheets fine as well., but no image comes up in HP Smart when using the ADF. Image is fine using the flat bed. ADF works fine for the copy function, but no image for scan function in HP Smart

Update, mine is for a HP 8040 Officejet
