Lightening went to ground across the street from me. The modem, router and printer were plugged into the electrical outlet besides the phone cables into the phone Jack in the wall.  I lost my modem, router and a small cable box.  When spectrum replaced them and set up my equipment.  I got a dial tone on my phone but when the printer was set up with the phone line it would knock out the telephone line and it would read line busy.  when unplugged from the phone line I would get back the dial tone. I can copy and print but now I can’t use the fax on the printer.  Can this be fixed?

Rats.  I am sorry that happened.

Good it was not any worse...

"Busy" Line / No Dial Tone

Replace the two-wire phone cord that you use to plug the landline into the wall.

You could try a different phone outlet (if you have one).

You could try plugging the printer into a different outlet that you have checked for clean power / voltage... This won't likely help but might be worth the effort if you can physically move the printer...

Unlikely but "maybe"...

The source of the problem might just be severe noise on the phone line - Voice transmission is pretty forgiving of noisy line bits - Fax "not so much".  That is one reason to try another phone outlet.  The caveat:  If the whole line was "tickled" by the damage, moving from one phone line outlet to another won't help.

Anything "fried" inside the printer is likely not even worth fixing - the printer is old and not worth the cost of repair.

The strike might have destroyed the modem inside the printer.

If the fax is a separate board from the formatter it might be worth hunting one up on EBay and replacing it to see if it works.
