We have 8 M479fdn devices. I have tested this on 2 of them with the same results. If you have both sizes of paper to scan, it will scan everything as letter sized if the setting is either letter or automatic. Automatic is not a choice on the display screen, it can only be selected in the web interface. If it is selected there, it changes the display option to letter if you had legal previously selected. It will scan everything legal sized if you select legal on the display before you start, pulling legal paper for all pages or adding blank space at the bottom of a letter size original if scanned.
I understand this is a low end mfp. Our M681z will detect the difference in sizes, but these devices won't.
Am I missing something here, or do we have to separate all our documents and just scan one size at a time on the M479s?

Hello Mtndugal,
For this type of printer there are several ways of scanning: scan to email, scan to network folder, scan to computer, webscan (it uses the Embedded Web Server for scanning), or scanning documents using software on your computer.
What we recommend if you need to scan a mixed size document (letter and legal sizes for instance), is to place the originals in the Automatic Document Feeder and scan the pages using the HP Scan software (it comes with the Full SW solution app). This app has an option to fix original size to letter etc, or setting the scanner to identify the size of each page.
If you need further assistance, you can call HP Tech support by dialing [content removed] and follow the menu options.

So, I think what you are saying is the only way for this model (M479) to be useful for copying/ scanning both sizes of paper is to use additional software, and adjust the image after it is scanned. Which, I guess answers my question: I'm not missing anything, these devices just can't do it.
It doesn't make sense to have an ADF that cannot distinguish between the two sizes of paper and requires using software on a pc to edit the documents to make them usable. Should be able to load the originals, press Copy or Scan, and be done with it.
