My OfficeJet 5255 was working fine when I recently packed it up for my move. I'm getting set up at my new home, but my computer doesn't recognize the scanner. It recognizes the printer but not the scanner. Why? I'm being asked to insert the disk that came with the printer to reload the driver but I don't believe a disk came with it. What can I do?

Hi @DW1990,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your computer recognizes the printer but not the scanner after a move, it's possible that the scanner driver or software may need to be reinstalled. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Check Connections:
- Ensure that all cables are securely connected between the printer and your computer.
- If you're using a USB connection, try using a different USB port on your computer.
Restart Devices:
- Restart both your computer and the OfficeJet 5255 printer. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues.
Verify Scanner Driver:
- Open the Device Manager on your computer.
- Look for the OfficeJet 5255 in the list of devices.
- If there's a yellow triangle or an error icon next to the scanner, it indicates a driver issue.
- Right-click on the scanner entry and select "Update driver" to see if Windows can find and install the necessary driver automatically.
Download and Install Driver:
- Visit the official HP website (https://support.hp.com) and navigate to the page for the OfficeJet 5255.
- Download the latest driver and software package for your operating system.
- Install the downloaded driver and follow the on-screen instructions.
Windows Troubleshooter:
- Run the built-in Windows Troubleshooter for printers and scanners. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, and select the Printer troubleshooter.
HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the HP website. This tool can automatically diagnose and fix printing and scanning problems.
- You can find it here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/printscandoctor
Manual Installation (if no disk):
- If you don't have the installation disk, you can manually install the driver.
- Go to the HP website, download the driver for your printer model, and follow the on-screen instructions for manual installation.
Check Compatibility:
- Ensure that the OfficeJet 5255 is compatible with your operating system. Sometimes, an outdated operating system may not have proper support for newer devices.
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve issues related to the scanner not being recognized by your computer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
