I have a new macbookpro and while I can see HP Utility and HP Scan on the computer- I am not able to add the MacBook to the HP ENVY PHOTO 7858 as a device in which to SCAN. Both are on the same Wifi. MacBook recognizes the device- which I thought would make it easy to scan TO. Currently the HP device is set up to scan to a Desktop computer in the home

Hi @LCNewYork,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To set up your new MacBook Air as a device to scan to from your HP ENVY Photo 7858 printer, follow these steps.
Verify Printer Setup
- Ensure the HP ENVY Photo 7858 is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your MacBook Air.
- Check the printer's control panel to confirm its network status is "Connected."
Check HP Smart App
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store.
- Add your HP ENVY Photo 7858 to the app:
- Open the HP Smart app.
- Click the + sign to add a printer.
- Follow the prompts to connect the printer to the app.
Enable Scan to Computer
- Open HP Utility on your MacBook Air:
- Search for "HP Utility" in your Applications folder or via Spotlight (Command + Space).
- Select your printer in the left pane.
- Under "Scan Settings," select Scan to Computer.
- Check the box for Enable Scan to Computer and ensure the feature is "On."
Update Printer Settings
- On the printer control panel, go to Scan > Computer or Scan to Computer Settings.
- Select your MacBook Air from the list of available devices. If it’s not listed:
- Restart both your printer and MacBook Air.
- Ensure HP Utility and Scan to Computer are enabled.
Test Scanning
- On the printer, choose Scan > Computer, and select your MacBook Air.
- Initiate a scan to confirm the setup works.

Troubleshoot If Needed
- Firewall Settings: Ensure your Mac’s firewall isn’t blocking the printer connection. Go to System Settings > Network > Firewall and add HP software to the allowed list if necessary.
- Reset Printing System: If the issue persists, reset the printing system on your Mac:
- Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
- Re-add your printer.
Note:
If you're still unable to set up "Scan to Computer," try scanning from the HP Smart app on your MacBook as an alternative.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
