I have a bought a lot of HP printers. Decided to try to move away to other vendors to address consumables issues but in the end was turned off by other problems and wanted to return to HP because the products always just worked - except now. The key feature I relied on for years was the ability to walk up to the printer and Scan to Computer. This option is now gone. After wasting an inordinate amount of time researching all support articles including: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/How-to-enable-quot-Scan-to-computer-quot-optio... I called for support. I am being told that this feature is not supported on the HP 7600 which is infuriating especially since the documentation for the printer and the level 1 support are not trained in helping end users set up network folders which seems to be the only similar option. I am ready to give up. These are my questions at this point:
1. Am interested in step by step instructions on how to set up network folders on a PC and on a Mac. Can anyone provide instructions or a link to instructions.
2. Am interested in what current printer can I buy that still has the scan to computer option that also supports ADF, duplex printing, and faxing - preferably in a smart tank configuration - as I think the 7600 is a bust.

@debsmusings, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
For Windows
Create a folder on your PC (e.g., Scans).
Share the folder:
Right-click → Properties → Sharing → Share
Give Read/Write access to Everyone or your Windows username.
Find your computer name:
Press Win + R, type cmd, hit Enter
Type hostname — note the name
Your folder path will be like: \\YourComputerName\Scans
Find your printer IP:
Print the network config page from the printer
Or check the printer display for the IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.5)
Open a browser → go to that IP (e.g., http://192.168.1.5)
Set up Scan to Network Folder:
Go to Scan > Network Folder Setup
Add a new folder:
Path: \\YourComputerName\Scans
Add your PC username & password
Save and test
Now, you can go to your printer → Scan → pick the folder → scan directly!
For Mac
HP Smart Tank 7600 does not support Scan to Computer or Network Folder on Mac.
Best option:
Use HP Smart app on your Mac to scan manually.
Or scan to email/USB from printer.
I suggest you refer to this guide: Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS) | HP® Support
Additional reference: How to scan with an HP printer | undefined
Also, if you want:
- ADF (auto doc feeder)
- Duplex printing
- Fax
- Scan to Computer from printer screen
- Smart Tank or low-cost ink
Recommended HP Printers:
HP OfficeJet Pro 9720
HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 (wide format)
These do support Scan to Computer, and have all the features you're asking for.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.

Well I will try again to set up the network folder. In your email you provided more concise answers and instructions than I got spending well over an hour with HP Level 1 support. The bottom line is we wasted nearly an hour trying to get it to work on a mac before I realized the guys was clueless on the mac and then we tried to make work on the PC but ran into all manner of permissioning issues. I will give it one more go because I loathe the idea of going back from tank ink to cartridges (too expensive and an environmental catastrophe!) Will let you know if I manage to get anything sorted out.
