Product: officejet pro 6978

I've been using this printer/scanner for several years.  I seem to remember always being able to use it to scan photos as a jpg file.  Recently I tried to scan a photo through the printer control panel and the only options I can choose to scan are pdf and tiff.  JPG is an option, but it's grayed out and I cannot select it.  Any suggestions why this has happened?
