Turned on computer today to get this false error message saying original is jammed in ADF. I have gone thru all the steps i have seen posted as to cleaning, etc. to no avail. Prety well versed in computers and printers, since I have sold and serviced many since the 1980's. This scanner feeder was working better than any we have had in the past from HP, and we probably have at least 15 HP printers now.
The only thing I have not tried is the "partial printer reset" someone mentioned. Do not know what the procedure is, tried something like holding in power key as printer is plugged in, etc, did not do anything.
I can get it to scan off flatbed in Windows Fax and scan and in HP's scan program, and also got a successful print test page, but cannot use the ADF for feeds.
Power cable reads proper voltage. I fthis ais a capacitor problem inside, I can disassemble and replace, but I'd like to try this partial printer reset function first.

Hi @markdpwigley,
Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
As I understand you are getting a false paper jam error message on your HP OfficeJet Printer when there is no paper jam. I'll try my best to help you with this,
Please make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.
Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Remove USB cable, if present.
Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.
If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website.
For further assistance, please click here
If nothing works, I would suggest the next step would be to perform a Semi-full reset on the printer. I am sending you a private message with the steps to reset the printer. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.
Let me know how that goes. Good luck!
Cheers!

After everything else I tried, I tried the reset to no avail also. But as I slid around back of the machine, I noticed the lid hinges had pulled up ever so slightly on the ADF feeder lid. I pushed the hinge back down in place and had it working again. That was a solution I had not seen anywhere in probably 4 hours of browsing. Almost embarrassing! But we are back in business. I have about 15 HP printers and/or scanners. Some others also have balky ADF, andwe just went to flatbed scans. I'll have to check to see if that might be the problem with the others.

This is the solution to the false error message. There is no jam. The whole top assembly is misaligned because the hinge has popped out. I suspect that this happens when the printer is up against a wall and the cover hits the wall when opened to make a copy. Great post Mark. I had spent over 4 hours trying all these jammimg tips. Problem with them is they don't apply to the automatic document feeder. Thank you!
