Officejet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

According to the printer specs, this AIO should be able to scan at resolutions up to 1200 dpi. However, the HP Scan utility, as well as sofware utilizing the TWAIN driver, only show resolutions up to 300 dpi. How can I get the higher resolution for photos, etc.?

The critical information in this video is that the high resolution scans are only available if flatbed is selected for source. I had it on ADF and, as shown in the video, resolution up to 300 dpi was available. Thank you.

Actually, at first I was going to be pissed off when watching the video, however,

even after the false start of having to save a short cut...argh!

...it came to the proper method for seeing up higher resolution scanning.

I've been very angry about this printer since I purchased it, it's an HP

and I expected much better from them.  Slowly but surely I'm getting there.

Now, if we can just get the printer to print in the same direction

for singe sided and duplex printing (both sides) when using

3 hole punched paper I'll be a much happier camper.

Thanks, the video worked.

Hi @aHnPisCheiSSe,

Glad to hear that your issue is resolved and all is working well now wrt High Resolution Scans.

For more scanning tips, click here.

For the print direction, think you may need to set the Duplex printing to be either "Flip Over or Flip up" (from the print driver)

Example:

Thanks for the video, it's well explained.

Unfortunately, when I try to save a scan at 600 ppi, I first get a message saying "Rescanning image with selected resolution", then 6 or 7 seconds later a second message syaing "HPScan has stopped working    A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

If I try a to save a scan at 1200 ppi, I get the same first message, followed later by a second message saying "The HP Scan Application was unable to save the file to the specified location."

Any idea what the problem is?  Im using Windows 7 Home.

Hi @BC218,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

How much ram does the computer have?

Usually, the issue seen could be due to several factors - memory size (the computer is not able to process the huge data for 1200dpi scan) or the network connection is slow and timed out among other factors.

Do you really need the 1200 dpi scan?  Usually, 300 dpi is more than enough for most uses.

Try another PC with a 16GB Ram and try to use USB connection as well.

Hope that helps!

Hi Greenturtle,

The problem isn't my computer's RAM, I had an HP Officejet Pro 8500 that I used for scanning at 1200ppi and have an Epson V550 photo scanner that I've used for scans at 2400 ppi.  While I like the Epson for scanning slides, the HP 8500 did better quality scanning of print photos.  Scanning a 4x6 print photo at 300 ppi gives a roughly a 450 KB file size with 1180 x 1718 dimensions; lower resolution than I would like.

I did GET "HP Scan Extended" installed and now my HP 8710 will scan at 600 and 1200 ppi.  Surprisingly, even at 1200 ppi the file size of 4x6 picture scan is still only 1.3 MB.  My old HP Officejet Pro 8500 could be much more customized for scanning than the HP 8710 and gave better quality scans.
