I have loaded both A5 photo paper in the main tray, and also postcard size in the smaller tray. Each time I try to print old b&w photos from my iPad,I have an error message coming up saying tray is empty or open. It is neither.
When it DOES attempt to print, paper gets stuck in the roller and doesn’t get printed.
i’ve tried switching it off from the mains then back on again, changing the paper size etc. all to no avail.
it prints the photos fine on A4 non-photographic paper
it’s driving me bonkers.
Help, please!

Hi @Telthepensioner,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating! Here are some steps to troubleshoot the paper feed issues with your HP 5540:
1. Check Paper Alignment
- Ensure that the paper is properly aligned in the trays. Adjust the paper guides to fit snugly against the paper without bending it.
2. Use Recommended Paper Settings
- Make sure the printer settings match the paper type and size you're using. In your print dialog on the iPad, select the correct paper size (A5 or postcard) and type (photo paper).
3. Clean the Rollers
- Sometimes, debris or dust can affect paper feeding. Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with water. Allow them to dry completely before testing again.
4. Check for Jams
- Open the printer and check for any small pieces of paper or foreign objects that might be causing the jam. Remove any obstructions carefully.
5. Try Different Paper Types
- If possible, try using a different brand or type of photo paper. Some printers are sensitive to specific paper types.
6. Update Printer Firmware
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or on the HP website.
7. Reset Printer Settings
- If the issue persists, you can try resetting the printer to factory settings. Refer to the printer's manual for instructions.
8. Print a Test Page
- Print a test page from the printer's settings to see if the issue occurs with standard settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
