I had this printer for about a year when I began having problems.
The unit won't stay connected to wifi. I have had it on two different wifi systems and computers--work wifi and an iMac, and my current setup at home with a Dell pc. I have the same problems regardless of what computer/wifi combo I use. The wireless routers are not the problem. All other wifi-enabled devices work just fine with the wireless routers at home and at work.
The only way of addressing the connectivity that has worked so far is to uninstall the OfficeJet drivers from my computer, then re-download them from the HP website. Even then, it only solves the wifi connectivity issue for a short time before the printer drops the wifi again.
Take today for example. I uninstalled and redownloaded the device driver software from the HP website. I was then able to scan 12 pages of documents to my computer. I came back later to scan another document, and the printer had already become disconnected from the wifi.
But here's the funny thing. I can still email documents to the printer email address and the printer will receive and print them. So the printer HAS to be at least partially connected to the wifi in my home.
I am beginning to think there is a design flaw in the printer's internal wifi system.
I am really tired of having to repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers to scan documents to my pc.
If I cannot find a solution that will work for more than a few minutes, I will just sell the printer and get another one of a different brand.
Thanks,
Jody Mills

Hi @JodyMills,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're unable to scan to your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Printer. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.
If the printer is capable of printing off an email that you sent using eprint, there is nothing wrong with the printer's wireless radio. This would indicate that the printer is on the network and has internet access.
When you uninstall and reinstall the software, the computer establishes a fresh connection to the printer each time, which is why it works temporarily.
It sounds like there is something on the computer is blocking the printer from communicating, such as firewall, anti-virus or other third-party applications.
- Try disabling them and trying again.
Also, there could be an IP address conflict between the printer and the computer.
- Try disabling Bluetooth on the computer and IPV6 on the printer. Reboot the router, computer, and printer.
What is the error message you're receiving, when you try to print and scan?
Please download and run the Print and Scan Doctor, it will likely diagnose and resolve the issue you are experiencing.
What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor (did it print or scan, any error messages)?
- Use Microsoft's MS Fix It Utility: Diagnose and fix printer and printing problems automatically.
- Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. It is always a good idea to back up your data before proceeding.
- System file check (SFC) Scan and Repair System Files & DISM to fix things SFC cannot.
- Clear the Temp folder using Disk Cleanup
- Perform a clean boot
- Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet (don't use a power bar or a surge protector). This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
- Try printing and scanning from the computer. What were the results?
In addition, please try the steps within these guides:
If the issue persists, please download and run this hotfix,
- Update rollup: Fix printing problems in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
- Try printing and scanning again.
- Click here to update the printer's firmware.
TIPS:
- Do not hide the SSID (network name).
- What encryption type are you using? HP recommends WPA and WPA2.
- Do you have a dual band router? Ensure both bands do not have the same network name.
If the issue persists, you might be experiencing an IP address conflict. It is a good idea to assign the printer a static IP address, outside your DHCP range. For example, some routers DHCP default range is 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.200. So, I would use 192.168.0.232.
- To assign the static IP address, use these steps as a guideline.
- Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer's front panel menu. Note the printer's IPV4 IP address.
- Type the IP address into your internet browser to bring up the EWS.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless on the left side, then select the IPv4 tab.
- Select Manual IP.
- Enter your manual IP address of (192.168.0.232)
- Enter 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask, unless it is different.
- Enter your router's IP address which can be found on the Network Configuration Page) for the default gateway.
- Please click Manual DNS Server. For the Manual Preferred DNS Server please enter 8.8.8.8 and for the Manual Alternate DNS Server please enter 8.8.4.4.
- Click Apply.
- Reboot the router, printer and computer.
- Test printing and scanning again.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck! 🙂

I would agree with everything above. I would like to add that you claim that it is a wifi issue compared to an HP issue. Why is it that I can have two computers and 3 phones connected to my wifi and the printer doesn't work?
I am also unable to print from my apple phone.
