Hi Chris,
The outcome of what happened is what was meant to happen.
Allow me to elaborate, When you disconnect the usb Cable from the computer.
The computer is not "Forgetting" about the USB device that you have plugged to that same "Port, Hub", the reason for that is that it has already identified the device you have plugged there, so if one day you'll connect it again the computer won't have a hard time determining which driver's to use for this device...
Sadly as this funtion sounds quiet handy, sometimes its causing the issue you had before, Other application's, such as the HP software, is unable to recognize the USB cable you connected because the computer is not really feeling as if something new is being connceted, In his thought's the device is something he already identified and therefor no further driver's are needed.
And for your question, Yes, Remove all of HP Driver's from the "Device's and printer's" Section in the control panel.
Don't remove anything else from the Device manager.
Dissconnect the USB cable and reidentify everything from the HP Software.
Best of luck~

Hi John
I've tried everything from removing the HP Printer from "Devices and Printers" and uninstalling the USB composite driver that disappears but still no luck.
It seems the HP software for the officejet 4500, downloaded from HP themselves, doesn't recognize the printer.
After removing the HP Printer from "Devices and Printers", restarting the computer, and then connecting the printer to the USB port on the computer, Windows 10 recognizes it but the HP 4500 Officejet Install program does not.
Is there anything else that can be done? Please advise. Thanks

hpiscnapp.exe runs the "HP Scanning" application as ragnar83 suggested, but the scanned pages are individually cropped to varying sizes before they're displayed in the "Final Images" pane at the lower right. Anyone know how to keep the pages at their original letter size?
Every page scanned with Windows Fax & Scan on my 6310 is scanned at the full legal size of the scanner so they can't be printed to a letter size pdf document without manually cropping each page.

Letter size documents scanned with Windows Fax & Scan to TIFF multi-page files at longer than letter size can be imported into InfranView, then printed to pdf or printer at letter size, eliminating the extra page length.

I have brand new Windows 10 computer. I have the best LaserJet3380 ever made by HP. Everyone who has owned it has said the same. It worked perfectly with my XP computer for 6 years. Then, it wlorked for a few months perfectly with the brand new W10 computer. But, recently there must have been an update to W10, because the scanning is very slow. I even have trouble printing multple copies. No one has been able to help.
We need HP to update their drivers for this all in one device.

Dear JohnGPB
First I'd like to say thank you and show my appreciation for the time you took to write this procedure of clean re-install.
I realize this thread is very old [in "web time" scale], but I have only recently upgraded to win 10 and have encountered this problem.
I have followed your procedure but after finishing it it seems a bit worse than when I have started.
Initially I saw the error as was presented in the first message.
I now receive this error pop-up window when windows start, or when trying to scan [see following image].
Tried all suggestions on that window, but all have failed.
HP Scan and Print Doctor seems to find no problem with scan.
Microsoft's HP Scan and Print also works well [but can't treat doc as pic and also save it as PDF, which is what I used to do from HP Solution Center].
Any seggestions are welcome.
