I finally got a hold of the right support at Gmail. I had to make a security setting change to my Gmail account and correct to SMTP server setting on the printer. Scan to Email is now working.
Thanks for the help.

I have been getting the same message (My HP Officejet 5746 will not scan to email. I keep getting a "Server Connection Error"...there was a problem connecting to the server, Touch Retry to Connect or exit." It will not connect. )
This began today, 11/25/2019.
Upon reading this string, I tried to scan to a different e-mail address...same error message.
Suggestions?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
To help you further with this, let us know the Operating System installed on the device your Printer is connected to.
Meanwhile you can try these steps:
1. From the printer control panel display, touch ( ePrint ), and then touch (Web Services Settings). 2. Touch Remove Web Services.
3. Restart the router and the printer.
4. On the printer control panel display, from the Home screen, touch ( Setup ).
5. Touch Web Services.
6. Touch Yes to accept the Web Services terms of setup.
7. The printer will automatically check updates and set up Web Services.
8. Touch OK when you see Web Services have been set up successfully.
9. When the printer is connected to the server, the printer prints an information page, and shows Web Services Summary on the screen.
Once done, set up scan to email again.
Let me know if this helps.
