Finally...@Dragon-Fur to the rescue!!! He has reached out to HP:
“I have alerted our internal board - if the issue is "HP centric" - that is, it is determined to be something that requires HP to intervene, we have people who can forward the concerns to HP.“
thank you!! Hopefully they will find the root cause and fix it.

Same problem and have to work remotely! Have a two year old Officejet Pro 7740 and I've had a two year problem with bad software.... And now this!!!! Also:- HP support does not exist! I'll buy anything but HP next!

Same issue, Whatever they did royally messed up several features. Not only can people not use non hp cartridges now without notice, the scan to email app is limited on the pages it will send. After spending 100$ on genuine hp cartridges the printer still won't work. Scan to email doesn't send in correct format, and the printer completely wiped out all my saved email addresses and NOW when I reenter the email information an error message pops up saying firmware problem. I honestly feel like this issue was created just so I have to go buy a new printer, and when I do it will NOT BE HP! I cant believe I have wasted so much time on something HP forced on me. Real convenient too for this company to do during their push for "remote working and learning" their priority is clearly the bottom dollar, not people.

I had the same issue today....asking for the code and then getting this from a new email with a format that cannot be opened. I did try renaming and saving as a PDF but that was also not an option. My printer is out of warranty and the virtual customer service could not help, so not sure where else to go with this.
I ultimately had to save my scans to a USB drive
Clearly HP made a change so hopefully that are monitoring this and will correct!!!!

Thanks! So that did help for me as far as being able to open, but super inconvenient. From the email file I had to click download, then "show in folder" then "open with" and choose the adobe. Still better than nothing but not what I want in the long run. I am glad I am not the only one.
