Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

Bought the HP Color LaserJet MFP M283fdw  1 year ago and this basic feature has never worked. I am diligently trying to troubleshoot it again.
I have followed many instructions in this forum. But none resolve the following error:

"The SMTP server uses an authentication method that is not supported. Try a different server".

My setup follows:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-Copying/Configure-HP-Laserjet-Pro-mfp-m283fdw-to-scan-...

and I'm using SMTP authentication.

When I disable the authentication, the error changes and becomes "The SMTP server requires authentication. Enter a valid username and password".  So that path doesn't work.

I have a **bleep** account, and I suspect millions of your users have the same. Clearly **bleep** expects an authentication.

Could you provide some help with the unsupported  SMTP authentication message please?

I  cannot try a different server because that's the server **bleep** supports.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. If there's another response that addresses my issue, please put the link here. I couldn't find one. This question https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/The-SMTP-server-uses-an-aut... has no answers.

regards

I solved the issue.

I'll try to explain as easily as possible for other users. I use the email service from a well known company that starts with G.

This company's email requires a specific app password to allow the printer to sent to my personal email.

So you need to do two things:

1. Go to your G company account settings (NOT to your email settings, but your overall account settings), in security, and find the two-step verification section. In that one, somewhere there's a topic about App passwords. Click it and press + to create an app password. The password is auto generated by the G company security system. I didn't know what to call the app, so I called it "HP printer". And the system created a 16 character password that I saved by cut and paste (you'll need to use it on the printer software).

2. Now login to your printers web interface, which is normally the printers IP address (which you can find on the printer itself).

Go to the Scan tab, and configure the "Outgoing e-mail profiles". In the SMTP server settings, for the G company, it's smtp.**bleep**.com and I used port 465 and clicked the "Always use secure connection". Then in the SMTP authentication section, I clicked on the "SMTP server requires authentication.....", I used my email address for SMTP User ID, and then for password, I used the password I created above, in step 1.

I saved, tested, and that worked.

Good luck everyone. I feel I achieved a small win today 🙂
