Hi @BSH445,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I can understand how frustrating it is to have issues with scanning to email, especially when everything seems to work fine on your email account. Let's try to get this resolved so you can get back to work.
- Have you recently changed your email password or enabled additional security settings like two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Outlook account?
- Are you using the same email server settings on the printer as you would on another device like your computer or phone?
- Have you encountered any error codes or specific messages when attempting to scan to email, aside from the credential error?
Let's try these steps.
Verify Email Security Settings
- Some email providers, including Outlook, may require an App Password if you have two-factor authentication enabled. Log in to your Outlook account settings, check if 2FA is on, and if so, generate an app-specific password. Enter this password on your printer’s email setup instead of your usual password.
Double-check SMTP Server and Port Settings
- Confirm that you are using the correct SMTP server (e.g., smtp-mail.outlook.com) and port number (usually 587 with STARTTLS or 465 with SSL). Make sure to select the correct authentication method in the printer settings to match these configurations.
Re-enter Credentials on the Printer
- Sometimes, simply re-entering the email address and password directly on the printer’s control panel can resolve credential errors. Ensure no extra spaces or characters are inadvertently entered, as these can cause login failures.
Update Printer Firmware
- Outdated firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues with email servers. Check if a firmware update is available for your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw on the HP Support website, download and install it, and then try scanning to email again.
Test Email Setup with HP’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)
- Access your printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer’s IP address in a web browser. Navigate to the Scan to Email setup section, re-enter your email profile settings, and test the configuration from there. This often bypasses temporary issues on the printer control panel and can resolve credential-related errors.

Good morning, i have checked port and re entered passwords everywhere. My 2FA is off and hasn't been on previously. Printer is updated and i am at a loss. I am pretty tech smart and this one is baffling. I tried all ports, all outgoing server options including smtp-mail.outlook.com. I keep getting the same errors saying username or password is incorrect.
