Scanned documents saved in Word are distorted

My new HP Envy 7224e printer does not save scanned documents properly to Word using HP Smart, as they are distorted and come out with letters in the wrong place, numbers instead of letters in some places etc. You can save the scan to Word without a problem but when you open it, it is distorted/ semi illegible. I spent a long time on the phone to the help desk and the lady clearly didn't know what the problem was. Needless to say she told me I should contact Microsoft which I did. The man on the Microsoft helpdesk obviously didn't know what the problem was either and told me I need to save the documents to PDF. I have tried this but it is not clear how to save them to Adobe and if I then wanted to convert them to a Word document, I would need to pay and this would be time consuming. I teach online and have all my documents organised for my lessons in Word. 

The last printer was an Office Pro 8610 and I never had a problem saving scanned documents to Word.

The Envy Inspire 7200 series is not in the same class as the old OfficeJet Pro 8610 / 8620 / 8630 printers series.

A general comparison indicates the supported features are different, the mechanics are different, supported paper size and types are different.  The Inspire printer is a clever printer - for example, it supports two-sided photo printing on the appropriate paper size and type.  The Inspire is not an OfficeJet Pro.

Comparing a newer "same class series" shows that the OfficeJet Pro 9000 series is closer to the feature set you had with the OfficeJet Pro 8610.  True - there are differences - much has changed since your OfficeJet Pro 8610 was a "current" model.

What is wrong?

What about the HP Smart "Save to .docx" Shortcut?

I am guessing the embedded HP Smart application "Shortcut" that saves scanned data to a Cloud storage location as .docx (Word) is not working at all -- or is perhaps not working as hoped.

True - If the tools in the provided software cannot not do what is needed, you need a conversion software that provides the level of accuracy required.
