While scanning family photos - I get about 25-30 pictures in - when I hit edit button to crop and add names it freezes and I get a blank screen. Only choice is to close the screen, and I've lost all my scans and have just wasted several hours of my time to redo all over again. HELP! Or is it time to buy a new printer/scanner?

Some of this depends on the software / application you are using, of course.
Much of it depends on how hard you are working the computer / printer.
Are you trying to scan from the flatbed / glass?
If yes,
Are you scanning multiple photos at a time?
If yes,
If using Windows / HP Scan,
Are you using "Detect Photos" in the printer software?
Are you scanning more than the one group of photos?
That is, are you scanning a group of photos,
Removing the first group - placing and ADDING scans for a second group, then third, fourth, etc?
If yes,
You have perhaps run the application / software / printer out of resources.
What?
Scanning is hard work - it takes a lot of memory, the connection must be rock solid, and the software / application must stay "untangled" throughout the entire process.
Ideas
Break the jobs up into smaller groups.
Let the system and printer recover for a few seconds between jobs.
Another approach:
Scan the photos as they come (no edits, just control the Window / scan size),
Save the photos as files.
Open the photo file in HP Smart > Import the file > Edit / Crop.
Save the file.
Slower but it won't blow up the scanned file / printer scan function.
