Welcome to HP support community.
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).
If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.

I find a link to this utility in an older post and it appears to address the problem, but you have to use the utility, not the front controls.

I should have mentioned the solution I posted only works for Windows. If there an a MacOS solution, I have not looked for one.
To use the solution I proposed:
- Download this file from the HP FTP server: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi.
- Install the application on your PC.
- Start the application (it will show up as "HP Scan Extended").
- Place any documents, etc. on your printer that you want scanned.
- Use HP Scan Extended instead of the control panel on your printer to scan and save the document.
I hope this helps.

There are a lot of us having this scanning with gray/dark background issues. Please post the resolution for every one to see. Mine worked fine for the first few scans and then all of a sudden it changed to dark with no errors or issues with any other parts of the printer/scanner.

I have been using a workaround for this problem. I keep a USB flash drive inserted in the USB port in the printer and I scan my documents to the USB drive. Then I take the USB drive and insert it in my PC. The scans on the USB drive are clear. No dark background. Works for me...

Same problem for me an all of my employees with a HP7855. The issues appears to occur with all 7855 ; have you (or another rep) tried to scan to email yourself on that device as a test before responding with generic cleaning instructions ?

Scan to email creates a grey backgorund.
My company has multiple users with the brand new HP7855 having the same issue. We are using Mac OS. I have attemped to contact an HP tech on numerous occasions and have had zero success. Terrible support thus far. We're thinking of returning all of our HP printers and moving to another brand if this is not resolved asap. Please advise of next steps.
